So my family lives out in rural Randolph County (as though there were another part of that area). In the past few months I've seen a couple of coyotes far from the house, but then last night I heard them from the front porch for the first time.

We've got animals around we'd rather not be harassed, and in general aren't comfortable with them getting too close. We also don't want to wholesale slaughter the bastards. Anyone who knows anything about dealing with them, we'd greatly appreciate your input.

When you say animals, do you mean livestock or pets?

Because pets should be able to fight for themselves. Let the best beast win, man.

buy yourself a .223 or .22-250 and dispatch them.

A solid wooden wall around this area and terrain is not really a viable option. Perhaps it's that lack of foresight that caused Doucherria Pizza to close, no doubt well before its time.

^Shooting them is not out of the question, although advice on how to get them into good shooting position would be helpful.

buy yourself some pizza from All Around Pizza and set up the bomb under them.

Or just buy some poison topping.

^^ They make electronic calls. I'm not an expert; I've never hunted them...but it seems like it wouldn't be rocket surgery.

I'm sure it isn't rocket surgery. I've done my googling and asking of friends who hunt, and, as usual, advice from both fronts is often conflicting. Figured I'd ask here so see if I could tip the balance one way or the other.

[Edited on February 28, 2011 at 1:09 AM. Reason : Admittedly I just parroted "rocket surgery" before I realized it made no sense, so touche sir]

yeah, i'm a pretty good shooter and a pretty poor hunter. i could probably teach you to make the shots, but i'm not really the one to ask about calling them into range (or sight).

Probably why I didn't PM you asking for hunting advice.

The shooting part I can handle.

^^^HGTV recently started airing ads using the term rocket surgery.

Also it was the June 11, 2010 word of the day:

My advice would be to paint a tunnel on a cliff face with black paint and try to get the coyote to run into it.

Coyotes are now found in all 100 counties of NC. It is a recent phenomenon as they are becoming more common in urban environments.

Release a roadrunner In your neighbors yard, it should keep them busy enough to stay out of your shit.

Haha I loled reading about painting the tunnel.

I've been through this all before and it isn't that bad.

If you don't have any already, buy a chicken or two. Do not get emotionally attached to the chickens because they will die. Set them in a remote side of the land/yard and let the coyotes eat them. watch and see what time the coyotes come and in what numbers.

Buy a second batch of chickens, do not get attached to this set of chickens because they, too, will die. Let the coyotes eat these chickens. watch and see what time the coyotes come and in what numbers. Buy 2(N + 2) bullets to match N coyotes.

Buy a third batch of chickens. feel free to get attached to these chickens because they will not die. Place the chickens in an enclosed area. Wait for the coyotes to enter and you and an associate fire.

Even if some escape, they'll never come back.

...

Also, avoid PETA. for some reason they are against nature taking its course.

Why would you watch coyotes eat your chickens on two occasions just so you can shoot them on the third?

1. Download mp3 file of wounded small animal (rabbit)

2. hook up Ipod to small battery powered speakers and set on repeat

3. Put speaker and Ipod in duffle bag (muffles sound slightly) and place in some grass where its not easily seen.

4. lay in wait 100 yards upwind with rifle

5. . . . . . .

6. Profit?

i'm serious about hunting them. coyotes and groundhogs were my main reasons for buying my newest rifle. all i need to get is an electronic caller. let me know if you're interested.

[Edited on February 28, 2011 at 10:16 AM. Reason : i think you mean downwind^]

[Edited on February 28, 2011 at 10:16 AM. Reason : and you better be hidden well if you want him to get that close.]

They're like mice, in the sense that they send out scouts initially and form habits about going to the same locations for food.

if you shoot the first time you'll get a few of them but not all of them.

Your best bet is to shoot them. That's what my grandmother does on her farm and that usually takes care of them. If it doesn't, that's where her Great Pyrenees comes into play
