These pirates aren't getting just SOME money... they're getting MULTI millions of dollars.

Yes victims are going to have to die. They were practically already dead when they were captured. They aren't afraid of killing people. People die in THE REAL WORLD.

I don't see how the pirates get away after releasing the hostages. I'd expect their boat to be blown out of the water and the money recovered by trickery and what not

You have Group A - The brain of operation
Group B - The kidnappers.
Group C - The money picker uppers.


I'd say Group A negotiates, Group C gets the money and deposits it.
Group A tells group B to release the hostages.

Killing Group B or Group C is pointless because they're so easily replaceable.

I am guessing much of the "ransom" being paid is by or through corporate interests that may have billions of dollars in assets on these boats. Its a bit myopic to only consider the human/life aspect of this situation.

If you had goods that were sitting and rotting, causing delays to market, causing millions of dollars in breach of contract lawsuits, you may be willing to pay a pirate 500k-5million to free the goods. Many countries have major corruption, and require bribery for these same companies to do business, this area of the world merely has a extra "tax" or "cost of doing business" for taking your boat through these waters.

I am by no means saying its always a good idea to pay, or that they should be paid at all, just that its hard to call anyone an idiot for paying off the pirates.
