If your HVAC unit doesn't work the first thing you should try is resetting the circuit breaker. Sometimes that works. Coincidentally our unit wasn't working just yesterday and after resetting the circuit breaker it was up and running again.

I have an older heat pump and the compressor is bad. They do not make parts for it anymore because its too inefficient.

It is running solely on the electric (emergency/supplemental) heat right now. My power bill is the next thing that's about to be fu**Ed. Its nice and toasty in here but I cringe when the electric heat turns on every so often and the lights dim.

^you're crazy to run that more than a day or two. You can have an electric bill go up 3-5x running those strips for a month. Without compression you might as well have a radiant or kerosene heater running. At least then you won't have all the loss inside the duct work.

Its only until Monday.

The funny part is the electric heat was not even working.. the piece that switches it on and off had gone bad probably years ago (maybe before I even lived here) and I never knew. I am lucky it was like that or I probably would have run it with the compressor locked up and not even known until the $600 light bill came.

My dad found the relay to get me through the weekend.

I will second this. Their sticker is planted on our thermostats. Our AC went out last summer, so I gave them a call. The guy came out - $99 service charge. He walked in, didn't look at anything except for the thermostats, and said "It's your thermostats. These ones (digital) don't last as long as they should."


I reply "Oh, ok, cool - how much are they?" thinking at worst I'm going to pay $200 with labor to install them.

He replies: "Well, it's about $600 with labor to replace them."

I promptly gave him the you have got to be fucking shitting me look and say "Thanks, uh, i guess we'll figure something out, but $600 is not do-able right now," really meaning "Get your scamming ass the fuck out of my house before I murder you."


The asshole says "oh wait, hold on, lemme go to my truck and see what I can do for you," and goes out to his truck. Meanwhile, I look up the exact model of thermostats we have on Amazon.com and find them for $40 each. Dude comes back in 5 minutes and is like "Ok, I can cut it to $450 for you." Again, I give him the you have got to be fucking shitting me look. He leaves.

I order the thermostats. They come in - I replace them. They were not the issue. Long story short - we were just low on Freon (or whatever it is now). We had a guy come out and fill it up, I returned the thermostats to the Amazon store we bought them from, and I now tell everyone about the scam experience I had with Weather Masters.

^^^ how old are the units? Since these systems are closed systems, in a properly-operating system you shouldn't have to recharge your cooling fluid since a recharge basically means some has leaked out and you are replacing it. Knowing this then means you understand you will have to recharge it again at some point unless the technician found and repaired the leak.

If the leak was miniscule and the unit is older then it is not a big deal. If the unit is pretty new or the leak was more than miniscule (I know it's a vague qualification here...sorry) I would make sure the leak actually got repaired because:

1) Playing the game of recharging or refilling your refrigerant every other summer is costly and unneeded
2) A system running low on refrigerant is harmful to the compressor which can cause early compressor failure meaning a higher bill than if you had just fixed the leak the first time it was charged.

You may have had the leak fixed initially, and if so then great. Otherwise just a friendly reminder since a lot of companies won't fix the leak unless you ask and will only refill the system knowing they will get repeat recharge business when you need it again.

Wow @ kiljadn's story. I think that's one of the few cases where I'd just tell him to get the hell out of my house and not even think about sending me a bill even if it was only $99.

Everybody should have a programmable thermostat. It pays for itself. There are six or eight wires that just screw onto the back and the connections are labeled (black wire to slot labeled black, blue wire to blue, etc). Easy enough for anyone to install. Make sure to note where each wire is connected to the original thermostat along with any anomalies (blue wire going into black wire spot on the thermostat) that you might need to follow on the new thermostat. Shouldn't be an issue, but makes it easy to revert back to the original if there is a problem during the installation.

For real. I was looking at getting a very nice 7 day programmable thermostat with a wireless remote that had a wireless sensor as a part of the remote and the install quote I got was still only $350 (almost $200 of that was the thermostat itself...). Still might do it but I am thinking of tackling it myself (the install is a little different than normal with this one for some reason).

The house was built in 2005 and had not ever had the freon recharged. Everything that I've heard from everywhere else indicates that that is a normal recharge cycle. Is that not correct?



Basically the unit was coming on, but was only blowing out hot air. As in CarZin's case, they did the HVAC in the initial construction, and that is why their name was on the thermostats (and inside the cabinet door under the kitchen sink). Once the system was recharged, we had zero issue afterwards.

Like I said, if a system is working properly, the refrigerant should not need to be recharged. However it is extremely common to have small leaks over time in residential AC systems so I'm not saying you have a major issue or anything. At this point, since it took 5 years for a noticeable difference in performance, I would say you are fine for the time being. However, the next time you need/get your refrigerant "recharged" specify that you want the leak found and repaired along with the refill.

Recharging/Refilling is a temporary fix for the problem of low refrigerant when the real problem is the fact that you are losing any in the first place.

Kiljadn, you need to find your warranty information. if you have a cheap builders grade, you probably had a warranty up to 5 years on the coils/condenser. Better units go up to 10 years. If they did a refill without checking for a leak during your warranty period which probably would have gotten you a new part, you should be pretty pissed (especially if your warranty has now expired).

My problem with weather masters was a POORLY spec'd unit install for my house. HORRIBLE capacity planning with the duct work and plenums. I had a Carrier builder grade, and unfortunately even though Carrier can make good stuff, I'll never use them again. The unit was complete trash by 10 years of age, and was already bad when I bought the house at 5 years.

I put in a high end trane and have been thrilled with the difference.

I also had Weather Masters come out and quote a zoned system install. Wanted something ridiculous.

Well, it's not my house (been house-sitting for a friend for 2 years), but I know that the system is out of warranty, and was when we got the recharge done.

I had good luck with Modern Mechanical, out of Garner. They put in the new system I had to get before I bought my house. They did good work and were really reasonable on their pricing.
