The building is planned to be destroyed as part of the Talley Student Center addition but this doesn't have to be the case. The site plan actually calls for the bookstore to become a green space outside of Talley."

Considering how ugly our bookstore is, I don't think I would mind it become green space instead.

and

NUKE THE SUCKER. The exterior has some really great features, but the truth of the game is that the building is run down and nowhere near organized or large enough. It needs serious renovation, or just incorporate some of the architectural features into the new building.

yeah who ever wants to save that 70s piece is retarded i've seen the full set of plans for this and its progress don't get in the way of it...

There are many things on main campus i wouldn't rip down but the bookstore, the psych building and a couple more just don't belong.

I enjoy your attempts at trying to date modern arc. They have me LOL'in

I'm torn, because the new renderings look really impressive, and I, also, really like the old. A good renovation would server the existing well, if kept.

Not sure why you'd think it's '70s if you've looked at it.

It was built in 1960.

I think I saw a monorail stop between the clear glass pedestrian bridge and the four kids conversing in suits.

i think my main problem is that when things like this vanish. the NCSU i was familiar with its taken away a little bit more, just like when they tore down riddick stadium. i just think its sort of sad i've been gone as little a time as i have and the whole place just looks different. i'm for change and all that jazz when its needed its just sort of hard to not have some sort of sense of loss attached to losing something that was part of your whole college experience.

Riddick needed to go as well. It was taking up valuable real estate the university needed.

I don't understand why you guys care. I'm assuming 0.03% of the posters in this thread go to NCSU currently. I have spent maybe 0.00432% of my college career in the bookstore the rest of the time i just walk by and ignore it because its ugly. Furthemore if they're going to build some sweet ass garden or cool building there or something who are you to keep that away from future students? Fuck your memories they are seriously not that special.

Worried about campus not being familiar when you go back? Good because its not 2002 anymore and this has nothing to do with you.

I'm AstralAdvent and i approved this message.

riddick was historic, but as was mentioned, took up too much valuable real estate. the book store is in now way historic, not a well-liked building, not aesthetically pleasing, and is taking up lots of valuable space. there is no reason for anyone to want to hold onto any part of this building.

I read this thread before going to bed and I dreamed there was a glass walkway over the train tracks from MAF labs to the student center, and the student center to the library. It was baller. For some reason I even dreamed up a cooling system for it; electrically controlled opacity changing glass and under walkway radiators.

I'd also be cool with a disney world style elevated train to move people around our various campus venues. Or even just a speed train from the library to Centennial.

It'd suck if they save it. The building is ugly and old. Knock down Talley, the bookstore, Harrelson and Lee/Sullivan and our campus looks 10 times better.

Holy crap those drawings of the new bookstore look TERRIBLE. Looks like someone strewed walls at various angles and interconnected it all with "aluminum" (which will probably be silver fiberglass like on SAS Hall and Centennial). And WTF is that tower-thingy? Wolfpack bridge? Monorail stop? Fuck that faux-futuristic mall. I'll take what we currently have any day.

Yes, the interior of the current bookstore is bad, bad, bad. But the accordion awning is all kinds of good. Who's for keeping the shell of the current building, completely gutting the interior, and making something good out of the whole deal?

Show me a sweet ass garden or a cool building and maybe I'll change my tone. Sure, my memories aren't all that special, fuck that. But who am I, or who are you for that matter, to decide what is and isn't ugly? Part of what gives special places their sense of place is the context and the history. Knock it all down and rebuild it and, sure, maybe it's more current, and provides more utility. But piece by piece, brick by brick, chip away at that sense of place and soon there's nothing left. Would you rather main campus become like centennial? Shiny, new, sterile? No sir, not me.

are college campuses of the not-so-distant future even going to need bookstores beyond Ye Olde Cache they'll keep in the library?

What with the advent of the internet, tablets and iPads, I think the textbook (the book in general) is becoming more archaic by the day, at least where the college campuses are concerned. Seems errant to dump a shit ton of money into a new bookstore that looks more like an airport terminal than a place to browse the shelves.

Unless they're just looking to build a fancy new common building under the ruse of a bookstore to garner more public support.
