Not a single thread on this already? Where'd all the God fearing TWWers go?

Anyway, what is something you enjoy often that you're giving up for Lent?

My religious calendar is all skewed. We're working on graphics for the set after easter already. I didn't even realize it was time.

Whats the dates again?

i know what Lent is and the purpose behind it...

but apparently it's not something Methodists are all too concerned with...

I mean...I go to church pretty much every Sunday and I've never heard anything about the "giving up for 40 days" thing...

but we did have an Ash Wednesday service this morning at 7 a.m...but my church is an hour away so I didn't quite make it...

so...I'm using the fact that I'm Methodist as a reason not to give up anything...

I always just say "my God loves me and doesn't make me give up things I like"

Matthew 6: 1 - 6, 16 - 18

"Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
2 "Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
3 But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
4 so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
5 "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
16 "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
18 that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

God doens't make you give up anything, you give it up in preparation for Easter and out of love for Christ. Christ loves you regardless of which you choose.

I thought you were supposed to give up something REALLY important, like something you almost couldn't live without. You know, actual sacrifice.

The bullshit people give up for lent is well....bullshit.

I'm not religious, but figured it couldn't hurt to give up soda for awhile, and Lent gives me a good excuse. Fried food is another vice, but considering I work at a chicken wing restaurant, that one is a tougher sell.

Back in my Grammy's day, if you were a good Catholic you just ate bread and drank water during Lent. Now days just giving up chocolate while pigging out on everything else is good enough

Hahaha one of my friends who is also pregnant said the same thing yesterday!

i'm being a good catholic this year and giving up something. this year its sweets and refined sugar. i've developed quite the addiction to the two.

one year i gave up pizza bagels. i had a SERIOUS addiction to it and my roommates dared me to give it up for Lent. i never really ever ate pizza bagels again

isn't the idea to give up a vice and as a result be closer to god...not just improve your diet (which everyone wants to do anyway, for different motivations)?

You can interpret it several ways. Giving up something during Lent is symbolic of the time spent by Jesus in the desert while he was being tempted by Satan.

I wasn't good yesterday and forgot to fast during the day

Fast food restaurants...in addition, of course, to "no meat Fridays".

trust me, sugar is a vice. especially when it's gotten so bad i'm wanting to eat spoonfuls of refined sugar to get my fix.

it will make me closer to god because then i won't be cursing him when the scale doesnt budge

My husband and the Knights of Columbus are doing the annual Fish Fry at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Cary

Every Friday during Lent for lunch and dinner

This year you can order/pay online and then pick a time to pick it up

I have to say that I never have understood lent. I consider myself christian, spent my whole life going to church, attended seminaries, mission trips, etc.

Yes I understand it is in remembrance of Jesus' 40 day fast and all that jazz. I just dont see the relationship between the two. And I absolutely hate it when people wear their religion on their sleeve, posting on facebook constantly what they are giving up for lent (see scriptures above about the hypocrites and fasting). If you want to do it, fine, do it, respect to you. But the second that you brag about it, you lose complete respect from me, and according to the scriptures "become as the beggar".

And one last thing. It really kills me when people say that they are giving up things like alcohol, smoking, sex, or other thing that someone claiming to be a christian should do in the first place

on a side note, i went to wikipedia to look up the history of lent (im sure its another false catholic-based tradition) and this is what it came up with

but dont you know, catholics aren't christians

KIDDING. actually when i was in high school in texas this uber religious southern baptist girl told me that catholics weren't christians and that i couldn't talk to her anymore because since i was a catholic, i was going to hell

thank you for reminding me of that super awkward moment in my life.

You know giving things up for lent is supposed to be a self sacrifice to the benefit of others, right?

All you people giving up sodas and sweets are doing it wrong.

Alcohol might work if you're a mean drunk
