The Ides were just a part of the Roman way of calculating what day of the month it was. Every month had an Ides. Other important days were the Kalends and the Nones and you indicated the day by saying one of those three indicators and then the number of days forward or backward. So basically all the soothsayer was saying was "be careful on the 15th day of March" which is not nearly as ominous sounding.
