I am going to be moving to Texas in May and need to hire a company to get all my stuff there since it is way too much for me to do by myself. Anyone have experience with any companies that they would recommend/stay away from? I am not looking to totally cheap out but at the same time I would like to save money where possible.

Thanks

pilgrimshoes just moved to TX...not sure if he hired a company or rented his own truck though. Do you really have that much stuff to require a moving company?

I have a 3 bedroom house with a garage completely full of stuff and no other male to assist me so yeah a moving company is pretty much a necessity. I was planning on packing everything up myself but just having them move it. I also got some relocation assistance so that will help as well but the more I can save the better.

As a middle ground, you can always rent the uhaul truck and get hired help to help you load/unload at your origin and/or destination. I have had good luck with the moving help they link to when you rent the truck.

Also, for what it's worth the uhaul trucks I have rented have driven much better than the budget truck I rented one time. Also, if you are relocating for a job remember to track your expenses as write-offs on your taxes.

i used to work for hilldrup moving & storage and most of the customers seemed happy & satsified. i really couldn't tell you much more than that though - i mostly did office work.

I used http://www.cartus.com/ And MoveMGT when I relocated. They were freaking awesome. Don't think either of them do personal moves though, they both work through your employer.

We used Moovers to go from Charleston to the NYC area- they are primarily based here and somewhere in California, but handle moves in other areas as far as I know. Had a great experience with them, even though we were not what they would consider a large relocation.

Avoid two guys/men and a truck. Had a crap experience with them.

I used the Upack "cubes" when I moved from NC to KS. I still had to pack everything up and load it into the containers, but then they picked them up and delivered them to my new address and I unloaded them. Much easier than going the Uhaul way if you were considering that at all.

So I will probably need to make a temporary/transitional move in the next few months. I've got a few big/heavy items I'll need help with and won't have a lot of time to waste on moving stuff. I'm trying to figure out if I should just rent a box truck and 2 TWWer's time on Saturday, or just box up my stuff and hire a moving company. It's a short haul, from Duraleigh Rd down near Jones Franklin/Tryon. Any advice on companies/prices? I remember reading about a really cheap company in the area that used ex-cons, but I can't find that post.

You don't want to use them. One of the workers ended up raping a customer and going on a five state killing spree before eventually being gunned down in Des Moines, Iowa. I'd stick with the old reliable, Two Men and a Truck. Alternatively, there are several local options that may be more economical based on your short distance. I'd check yelp and similar sites as they will probably have the most up to date answers.

MrsCake and I just had a godawful experience with North American. Drive basically changed delivery dates on us multiple times, didn't tell us, didn't provide us with paperwork that he should have, and then the company acted like it was no thing when we called asking where our stuff was. It was a disaster and I will never use them again.

They were sourced by Dimon and Bacorn, who did an OK job, but are still ultimately responsible for the companies that they subcontract.

I've moved three times with my company and have used Cartus, but they broker through to movers. The van lines have always been Allied and for the most part I have been pleased with them. It depends what type of guys you get doing the packing and loading more than anything. Sometimes smaller companies are the best as they are more accountable than a major van line.

Are you serious? From TROSA? Wow. I've kept them in the back of my mind if I ever moved locally because of all the favorable reviews I've read of them on here

look who posted that. He's full of shit, as usual.

I'd use TROSA for an in-town move any day.

I had a good experience with All my Sons, and plan on using them again for a move from RTP to Richmond.

I guess since I made this topic I should follow up...we ended up using allied and had a great experience. They packed up everything and moved it with no issues. Showed up when they said they would and were all nice and hard working. I wasn't there for either the packing or unloading, my wife handled that, and everything went very smooth.

hmm, if TROSA is the cheapest, then I may just hire two willing people and rent a box truck.

TROSA seems like $330 min for me; maybe $220 if done quickly. I think I could get away with <$150 with 1 or 2 people helping and renting a truck.

I'm going to need to move about half a household worth of stuff to DC at the end of April. BobbyDigital recommended All My Sons -- has anyone else had experience with any other moving companies?

I'm not really concerned about a lot of stuff being broken, but I have two large TVs I'd like to not get messed up during the move.

I used Hiro and Uhaul. Came out for about $130 total. Of course, that only works for easy, in-town moves. But Hiro is a worker, even if delirious from a lack of sleep.

about to move to Richmond in July. This reminds me I need to go ahead and call some movers. Given my good experience with All My Sons last time around, I'll start with them.

This is relevant to my interests. Moving to Houston at the end of the month. I'm assuming All my Sons does long distance moving.

Someone I know moved from NC to TX a few years ago & she made an addition to the contract that for every day they were past the agreed upon delivery date, she'd get $200 back

They called on her delivery date & said they'd be there 4 days later. She reminded them about this part of the contract & miraculously they met the deadline.

Might not be a bad thing to add into a contract in case you need it!

All My Sons just quoted us at $89 an hour and refused to estimate how long it would take. No thanks. I'll do it myself. Emailed TROSA too. May just need to snag my Dad and brother and their trucks + a U-Haul maybe.

All My Sons just quoted me $2500 from Raleigh to DC if I picked the day of shipment; $1600 if they just came and picked it up and then delivered it the next time they were headed up there.

After talking to a friend who used a moving service to Utah and only had it cost about $1000, both are way too high.
