i know about fgm, but afaik, it is not practiced where those pics were taken. fgm is prevalent in africa, among both muslims and non-muslims.

i am sure a part of it has to do with recreating the hymen so that men think their wives are virgins after marriage. and part of it just the non-sense that comes with material wealth and 'modernity'/'fashion'.

Most of my family lives in Jeddah, but I've visited folks all around...Mecca, Medina, Riyadh, Ta'if...

My dad is actually from Afghanistan, but he came over here in 1980. When he lived there it was nowhere NEAR as conservative as it is today.

Yep, when the Soviets came in '79, they pretty much totally destroyed the place. Killed a couple million people and shattered the entire country. Whatever they didn't fuck up, the Taliban (rooted in the Saudi model) finished.

I've never been to Saudi Arabia, but I've read a little on the subject, and I guess I've spent more time in the Arab and Muslim world than the average American...

Would you agree that there is a super-conservative majority, dominated by Wahhabism, but that there is a more hedonistic, liberal, and in some cases even somewhat Westernized faction, mostly made up of the very wealthy (most notably parts of the royal family)? These people who wouldn't object to laser vag-surgery also happen to be the ones who can afford it.

Of course, from what I've heard, like in any other repressed group of people, there is an additional group of those who put on a good show, but behind closed doors, have walls and shelves covered in porn DVDs and liquor, and probably are OK with cosmetic vag-surgery.


I guess the only thing that suprises me a little bit is that it's advertised so publicly and bluntly.
