This has to be done to be fair to Bob Wade.
As critical as we all are of that piece of shit, anybody who gets called out by Debbie Yow like that deserves a thread.
He's got a long way to go before he gets a free pass for mailling in a season like that at his age. Two fucking hours spent on recruiting a year aren't good enough anymore
***Keep track of the declining Maryland program here. I hear Jordan Williams has declared for the draft and is sick of school...doesn't plan on coming back 4/5/2011 6:01:17 PM |

In typical Maryland fashion, their premium board is messed up and lets you read some of it for free. An interesting Gary Williams story located here:
http://maryland.247sports.com/Board/67/My-friend-A-former-manager-for-DC-Assault-1593434/1
(in case they fix the bugged pay wall here's a duplicate)
Quote : | "I contacted a guy who went to my High School who was a manager for DC Assault and now manages basketball at KState. He is very in tune with everything that is DC Assault and how every player was recruited. He told me the stories of Quinn Cook, Tyler Thorton, and most importantly Wally Judge.
Tyler Thornton was recruited by our Terps, and a recruiting letter was sent to him handwritten from Gary. The letter was saying how he would be a great addition to the program and how he would fit in and that he should take a visit to campus. In the middle of the letter Gary started calling him "James" and he referred to him as James for the majority of the letter. This caused laughs among the team.
Quinn Cook is a player that was all remember went to the Duke game and stormed the court. He was a guy who we thought we were in good with. It turns out that Nolan Smith (DC Assault) and Quinn were very good friends and Nolan influenced his decision HEAVILY. He said that Quinn really loved Maryland, but in the end Nolan influenced him along with influencing him to go to Oak Hill.
Finally and most importantly the active pursuit of Wally Judge. Wally again is a DC Assault guy and my friend became close with him over time and they're good friends. He said that while the Maryland rumor is indeed the strongest, and he read a tweet that said "Wally Judge is attending classes at Maryland" it is not the rumor with the most substance. Although no one can contact Wally directly the schools that have shown the most interest in contacting KState are Kentucky and USF. He said Wally does not know where he wants to go yet. " |

i grew up in Baltimore, and i can admit i was a huge Maryland fan until i enrolled at State
as i've gotten older, i have realized how awful GW is at recruiting...he constantly lets the best players leave the state (Selby, Barton are recent examples)
even if you look at the squad that won the title, most players on the roster were not big-time recruits...i think he lucked out with that team

i think some of that could be attributed to the fact that he doesn't like messing around with handlers. he has botched a lot of recruiting visits by just being an asshole though. 4/9/2011 7:35:28 AM |

It's not that Gary can't recruit, he just chooses not to mess with the AAU circuit kids and kids with handlers.
Gary would be a helluva coach if he had the talent. Half of his national championship team basically fell into his lap for him (Blake, Wilcox) 4/9/2011 11:35:42 AM |

UConn loves stealing talent away from under Gary's lumpy nose
at a certain point you have to say fuck it, i'm not letting them leave the state no matter what
but he refuses, he is stubborn as a mule, and will not change
thus general mediocrity with a good team every few years 4/9/2011 6:07:50 PM |

Quote : | "The list of names is long when it comes to prized Baltimore-Washington and Northern VA area recruits, Gary either lost, or never bothered to recruit. Names like Carmelo Anthony, Michael Beasley, Kevin Durant, Rudy Gay, and Ty Lawson.
Year after year I get sick to my stomach watching players like, DC native Delonte West lead St. Joseph’s to an elite eight in 2004 and and I would love to hear the real excuses and reasons on how Gary missed out on Dante Cunningham.
The 6’8 220 pound- power forward hailed from Silver Spring, MD and played, get this—four years in college, at Villanova.
At Villanova, Cunningham led the team in scoring in his senior year and carried them to the final four in 2008.
When the Memphis Grizzlies selected Greivis Vasquez at the end of the first round last summer, it was the first time since Juan Dixon in 2002 that a Terp was picked in the first round of the NBA draft. Not since the mid 60’s has the program had an eight-year draught without a first round NBA pick.
From 1995-2003 the Terps had 10 total players selected in the NBA draft. Since 2003, another span of eight years there have been just three and that includes Vasquez.
In 2010, Vasquez became the first Terp since 2003 to make first team All-ACC. From 1999-2003 the Terps had at least one make the team and two made the team in 2000 and then again in 01.
Sounds like Williams may be losing his knack for recognizing division one talent when he sees it.
Last year highly touted recruit Kendall Marshall had major thoughts about becoming a Terp. He had already visited Villanova and NC. At Villanova, Marshall toured the campus on a golf cart driven by Jay Wright. In Chapel Hill, he ate dinner with head coach with Roy Williams.
At Maryland, his mother was asked to wait outside the men’s locker room, where inside the assistant coach asked Kendall and his father to have a seat on bench that had to be cleared of clutter. Then on a dry erase board, he gave them both a short presentation about how Kendall would fit into Maryland’s program.
“That was it,” Dennis Marshall said. “The whole visit was over in 20 minutes. No, tour of the campus, no tour of the facilities … nothing. We just walked back to our car and went home.” " |

Gary has won the ACC reg. season outright once in 20+ seasons. He's won the ACCT once in 20+ seasons. He's won the NCAAT once, and this gives him the authority to do whatever he wants in his mind, which is great for K and Roy. If he ever bothered to be a salesman or possess the first inkling of how to act in public, he'd have landed two or three of those big names. A Carmelo or Lawson would have changed Maryland's team entirely.
2002, Baxter, Wilcox, Dixon, and Blake all spent extensive time on NBA rosters, so to say Gary is the egghead genius is inaccurate. Blake still plays. Mouton and Holden were also solid players. That roster didn't have a 5 star (Maybe Wilcox was, don't know) but they had 5 guys that were upperclassmen + WIlcox and could flat out play and didn't get any hype on the recruiting trail. Duke lost Battier (NPOY) after 2001 and UNC was hitting rock bottom with Doherty in 2002. The stars aligned for Gary in 2002. If he wants to think he's an elite coach who can act a fool, fine by me (And K and Roy obviously). Even K, with 4 rings, countless ACC reg. season and tournament titles, doesn't pull half the stuff Gary does.
I'm not about to say a head coach is 100% responsible for getting grown men 18-22 to graduate from college, but the sub 20% grad rate for that 4+ year stretch? That can't be good and to not own it is ridiculous.
Elite coaches don't go 8 seasons without reaching the sweet 16, especially coaches who are 10+ years into the same job. He's a good coach, but for him to think he's elite hurts Maryland (in recruiting because of his apathy) and helps the rest of the acc based on the potential of a big time DC area school. The 2002 title is his, but it's not making things better for MAryland basketball now, or in the future, recruiting, however, would.
