Has anyone ever been to one of these? Is it awkward?

I'm going to one this summer and both families seem outdated in their mentality. Does a culture clash take place, or does everyone relax and celebrate the marriage?

I've been to two. One was Chinese-Swedish, the other was black-white. The first one everyone seemed to get along although most of her older family only speaks Chinese and most of his older family only speaks Swedish so they could have been talking shit and no one else would be the wiser

The other one most of the black guy's family didn't bother showing up. It was sad

Going to one this summer...interested to see what it will be like. It's up north (Connecticut) and they've been dating for a while, so I think the families are okay with it. And although the dude is a former football player, he seems white enough to where I don't think there's going to be a big difference in the wedding parties.

Will be nice to finally go to a wedding where more than one or two people can actually dance.

mine was interracial. white + chinese/cambodian. just like any other wedding except with more azn people, no jesus. the religion thing worked out really well actually. my parents were dead set on the preacher of the church i grew up in marrying us. he's a SUPER nice guy, but we're just not religious at all. instead of upsetting either side of the family, we told jody we wanted him to do it but to do a generic kind of thing. win-win

as far as the food, we had regular white people food plus rice. roast beef & turkey carving stations, mashed regular & sweet potato station, fruit/vegetables, chocolates, meatballs, rice, maybe a couple of other things, & wedding cake.

i've been to one of his cousin's weddings that was white + azn, and the reception was 100% 8-courses of weird seafood asian style.

no tension at either.

ive been to several

theres no difference, everyone had a good time, great weddings

unless you have families full of dumbasses

the only culture clashes are gonna bepeople dissing the wedding designs and decor. like every other wedding ceremony.

So, are all the blacks supposed to sit in the back of the church?

My brother, who is white and from NC, married a girl, who is black and from the virgin islands. There is definitely different cultures going on there by food and wedding tradition but we all celebrated together. It was not awkward at all and everyone that was invited really wanted to be there and celebrate the union. It was one of the best weddings I have ever taken part in.

I have been to other weddings similar and everyone celebrated together because only people who loved the couple were there.

I do know you can make it awkward so don't do that. That is absolutely retarded.

My sister-in-law is black and her parents are from Trinadad and Tobago (her dad was a professional soccer player). The wedding was not awkward at all. We had people from all over, like the United Nations (guests came from all over the United States and from the islands). It was very interesting to see the way people dressed based on customs where they came from and their accents were unique as well. It was even mentioned how not so long ago this would not of happened. Luckily, up north they are more tolerate then the south (especially deep south). They have since had a baby boy.

My cousin did on my dad's side, but nobody in my family is racist at all or had anything against them getting married. It wasn't awkward at all, there wasn't really a culture clash because it was a very middle class black family that was virtually identical to mine except in color.

The biggest culture clash was actually my family being from the rural mountain area and them being from Charlotte lol.

The music was cool, island music, easy to dance to. The food was great, most of it was just regular american food, I think there was one item from the islands. Of course, had a huge open bar and also the food was catered and there was lots of it.

My aunt married a black man and it was a great wedding. They have since gotten divorced, but Uncle Bob is still my favorite uncle!! If there was any tension it was on his side, b/c his mom was a famous civil rights person and I don't think that she liked her son marrying a white woman.

My brother married a black chick in 2006 and I was in the wedding (which was an extremely small outside wedding). The family loved my bro and it wasn't awkward at all, but of course the two families were like polar opposites. They were really country and ghetto, and my fam is a lil' country and well above middle class. But they eventually got divorced for unrelated reasons.

My half sister married a french guy but there wasn't any awkwardness. Only thing was that a lot of his friends spoke only french so they did the ceremony line by line in english followed by french.

I've been to a couple. There was a little bit of awkwardness at a wedding between an Indian groom and white bride, whose family was pretty rednecky. I don't think the race part was so much the issue as a refusal on behalf of the whites to try new things. None of them wanted to try to dance to the Indian music or eat any of the food, so most of them left early.

If you want to know if your scenario about a simple interracial wedding is awkward,

Well then ponder this scenario

What if you're the adopted black child into a white family, and your white sibling is marrying into a black family and everyone keeps staring at you wondering if you sat on the wrong side of the aisle because you just didn't know any better.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

# get over it
# you're so racist for posting threads like this
# just kidding

my Grandpa didn't go to my uncle's wedding, because he was marrying a black woman. but a couple years later they had a kid, and my Grandma made him go and visit. he held the child, and the next day he dropped dead.

QFT! Been to 2 of these. Neither allowed dancing...one had a string quartet, the other had no music. Left both early.

FWIW my mom is white and my step-dad is black. They got married after living together for some time, didn't really have a ceremony or anything so there was no wedding to go to. Tensions were very high in my family, mainly my mom's parents, but they have come around and everyone gets along very well now.
