Zappos has free shipping on pretty much any order. When I buy shoes, they always charge me NC tax though. I thought that if you ordered online from another state, then you didn't have to pay state tax.
Is it possible that they take the "tax" money that they charge and apply it towards your shipping and pocket the rest?

for a long time NC didn't charge sales tax on online purchases

now it does, even on intangible things like itunes content

This is pretty much the only tax topic I know anything about. It's only because I used to work at a tiny internet startup where the owner wanted to squeeze every penny he could out of the customer and tried everything to get around this.
