man that sux.

For those of you who don't know, I do not support any type of smoke blowing/coal rolling/oraling anywhere outside of closed-course events. There's no place for bullshit like it in the diesel sport, and as far as I am concerned if it continues it will be the demise.

Now, going forward, there are lots of innovations coming out of the woodwork such as EFI Live becoming widespread, people like Banks and Wade Moody (Drives the flo-pro duramax S10) who are fast with nearly zero smoke, and now I'm reading about guys tuning with AFR reference to maximize performance (which ultimately equates to less smoke).

Yeah black smoke means you are leaving power on the table.

Dr pepper will not stand for leaving power on the table.

^while I hate it, there's not much more I can currently do to my setup to clear the smoke, without spending a grand or two.

it's that damned transient response that kills the mechanical pump guys

if you had a grand or two what would be the fix?

would it generate more power or just clear the mess?

is that hard on piping or other components?

I've an excess of fuel now, next step is bigger turbo = more air. There's a little more to it than slapping on a turbo, but stepping from an Airwerks S363 to an S475 would probably do the trick. I won't have to do any supporting mods, unless I up the boost pressure. The additional flow rate resulting from lower turbine side restriction and larger compressor would get me more peak power and allow the turbo to 'clean up the smoke'. Based on my conversation with the guy who built my injectors, I should have enough fuel for ~650 - so 100whp more is probably on the table.

BUT... that might not fix the transient response smoke (i.e. the time between mashing the gas and the turbo reaching 20 or so psi).

Some people mistake boost threshold for lag but yes transient response is the real lag. Or boost threshold+ transient response .

My dilemma....

Either drop a stage 4 transmission into my current whip (2005 Duramax) so I can boost up the EFI live tune higher.

OR

Sell and buy a newer model (don't want to go any newer then 2010) and have to upgrade everything all over again. I just can't help but prefer the newer body style over mine.

^^even though i'm partial to the LBZ I do believe it's still the best Dmax available. The new LML is tough but you're gonna pay for it. only difference between your LLY and the LBZ is the program which you have changed. i say stay with what you've got.

^ Noted and I think your right.

Its a good truck. I really can't complain except to be nit picky over superficial shit like body style.

So far we've done:

EFI Live (5 tunes done by Dustin at Diesel Addiction)
Banks Cold Air Intake
EGR Delete
Straight 3.5" pipe from engine into dual welded 5" tips
AirDog 150
Upgraded the turbo with a Bantam wheel (nothing fancy there)
6" FabTech lift
20" BMF R.E.A.P.E.R. Death Metal wheels with 35" Toyo Open Country A/T II tires

But I want more power... hence the desire to drop a stage 4 into her since I really can't push more than 100hp extra on the stock transmission without risking limping home one day...

i think the new ones are ugly as sin. the body style you've got is my favorite of any of the recent GM iterations. i like the GMC a lot better than the slanted headlight chevy version.

"Batmowheel" http://www.bullseyepower.com/billet.asp

And go ahead and buy a transmission, going to do nothing but lose more money if you try for a new truck... unless you just want the new truck.

yeah, if you scroll through his photobucket it has some pics.

typically there's a bypass or check valve that allows the compounds to overcome the flow of the blower at high boost

It's a chevy truck, that you've put thousands of dollars into, just have someone put the late model front end on it. Won't cost you much more, and cheaper than starting over. Chevy trucks are one of the most commonly customized trucks on earth, its been done before.

I wonder what the cheapest you could build an 11 second truck is.

you can build a cheap truck that will 'run' an 11..... how many times it will do that is a different story. you really have to know what exactly to do, and to do 100% of the work yourself.

There's a guy in CA who built the 'junker drag truck', probably the cheapest online documented 12V build.

Had I not back-halved mine, I would safely say I could make a 'decent' 11-sec truck for ~$15k.

First pass I launched ~12psi, drivetrain torqued over enough to rip out the t-case shifter rod bushing (one I had apparently damaged during the trans swap). It fell out, swung down and hit the driveshaft at the end of the run - so I just pulled the rod and engaged 4wd manually for the second run.

2nd pass I tried going all out. staged hard against an SRT8 GC with nitrous (wanted to put on a good race, regardless), accidentally boosted it to ~25psi when the lights were dropping, let off and ended up launching at ~20psi. Held him for ~60ft I didn't shift fast enough and ended up with a 9.1x @75, 1.98 60'.

It is driven by a B&J 3 speed transmission with U.S quick drive converter system and a Precision converter. So... custom. My interpretation is that the only thing that makes this thing a diesel is the injection system (other than the obvious)
