I will be going to the philippines on business tomorrow and wanted to know if I could simply take my sim card out of my sprint htc evo and still utilize the camera portion without being charged for any data etc.? I would think that if the sim card is taken out of the phone I should be able to do this but wanted to know if anyone could confirm.

Nevermind it looks like I do not have a sim card in this phone like my old sprint phone.

Is there a way to turn phone and any data services off?

simple... just dismantle the phone and extract the lens and memory device. solder the wiring from the camera into the communications board on the memory stick and create a shutter button using a little switch from radio shack.

i have no idea what i am talking about

would a cdma phone even roam there? i wouldn't think he would even need to worry about airplane mode.

You'd probably want airplane mode so it isn't searching for a tower and wasting the battery. Especially with it being an Evo.

The Philippines is entirely GSM, so your Sprint phone won't even work there. Airplane mode just to be safe.

Couldn't you just borrow someone's digital camera? Better pics and won't have this issue?

Duct tape over the screen so only the camera can be used.

Pretty sure taking photos in airplane mode can still have data usage. I tried to be cheap like this and ended up spending $431 on roaming fees. To be safe I would leave the battery out UNLESS you are snapping a photo. Matter of fact keep the phone in one pocket and the battery in another just to be very safe. Nothing like coming home from vacation with a fat bill. With the conversion rates between phillipeans data and US data even one KB of data could be a months rent. Good luck.

It won't matter if it tries to pull data or not since there will be no cdma towers to connect to. From looking at Sprint's international roaming agreement, there's only 1 city (Manila) in the Philippines that allows CDMA roaming. http://internationalroaming.sprint.com/IntlCoverage/WelcomeRoaming.do

The whole point of airplane mode is the cellular transmitters are shut off.....I think some newer phones allow wifi in airplane mode (since some flights now have wifi) you should be safe in airplane mode.

You can also use your phone on facebook, email, google talk, etc by using wifi anywhere you can find it where you are traveling to.
