I'm looking for a 4 door car. Can't be ford, saturn, gm, dodge. Price range is $800 - $1200. Preferably something that runs.

How soon do you need it?

I have a '93 Mazda Protege w/ 103k miles/auto trans/4door/alloy wheels/power locks&windows/cd player/after market speakers that I will be unloading soon.

A Ford or Saturn are the only two brands that you have a chance in hell of getting a running, half-reliable car for ~1000 bucks. Even then it's going to be tough.

What's with the brand picking when your price range is so low... I mean really.

I think you just proved his point actually. If you actually look at the CL ads there, most of them are ragged out, have extremely high miles or flat out dont run. Beggars cant be choosers and really saturns are decent cars in my experience.

Tons of garage folk will disagree with this statement. I've personally bought two e30 BMWs, one for $1,000 and another for $400, that turned out to be very reliable. The $1,000 one did need a wheel bearing that was around $300 installed iirc, so I usually say it was a $1300 car.

You should put a $2 minimum to exclude the cars with no price listed or $1 in the price. Also bump the max price up to $1500 since most people can be negotiated at least a little.

Deals can be had, but you have to search often and move quick when a deal pops up. If you don't jump on it someone else will.

I've got a 1994 Buick Regal Gransport. 168k miles, no heat or a/c, but runs well. Has a coolant leak somewhere which I'm not going to fix. $1200.

^Do you have the same model restrictions the OP has? $1200 is slightly under the KBB fair value for my car, which it justly deserves. I was going to hang onto it and drive it into the ground until I can save enough for something much better, but selling it would work out just as well I think.
