I have actually packed the area in salt overnight too. That helps deflate it before you do your surgery. It burns like hell though.

I had that shit with a vengeance late in my teens.

Dad eventually sat me down on his operating table (he is a pediatrician, an internist, and an emergency-medicine specialist), killed off part of my nailbeds after injecting some topical anesthesia, and snipped out a couple huge corners of my toenails.

I have actually used plain old table salt in a pinch. It really sucks and I only did it cause the entire area was so swollen you couldn't really get to the edge of the nail to yank it out.

i have just gotten into the habit of sliding a knife down the side of my nails so it doesn't happen. I do it every couple weeks and haven't had a problem since I started doing that (although i don't wear cleats regularly anymore, so i can probably stop)

I keep my toenails so short they all kinda hurt all the time. On the bright side, no ingrowns.
