So I'm finally getting around to getting my eyes examined and new glasses for the first time since early '08. Since 2000 I had gone to Dr. Croom, over near the bell tower, but upon searching for updated information for his practice I see that he passed away in late 2009. I knew he wasn't in good health (his assistant had primarily taken over the practice the last time I went) but sad to hear that.

In any case, I need recommendations for a new optometrist. Near campus (where I still work) or south Durham (where I live) would be ideal, but distance isn't the be-all end-all. I'd also love to go somewhere with a good frame fitter on staff, or if need be to a separate shop entirely. The lady who worked for Dr. Croom dealing with frames was fantastic--I never had to wander around looking and randomly trying things on, she'd always suggest a few and within 3 or 4 pairs she found something that looked great on me. If anyone knows where she ended up, please share...

They would need to accept State Health Plan/Superior Vision, but I don't think that's a problem.

The only advice I have is to stay far away from eye care associates. Their primary goal is to upsell you additional, unnecessary tests usually not covered by insurance.

The optometrist in Crossroads is a fucking disaster.

As a result, I too am looking for a new optometrist.

Raleigh Eye Center is alright. Nothing great, but usually painless.

Has anyone had good luck with costco or Sam's club or something? I need to get my rx updated on the cheap. Went to eyecare associates last time (at tryon and kildaire farm) and do not want to go back. They refused to give me my full rx (including pupillary distance).

i've had good experience with eye care associates. they do recommend some unnecessary things like bobby digital said but i just say no and they move on. they accept the state/superior plan.

I recently went to Dr. Stikeleather, at Cary Vision Care. He's a cool guy and his new office has a lot of cool equipment. http://www.caryvisioncare.com/

A friend of mine recently got LASIK and had it done there too. Now he's not all o_0 anymore.
