http://www.premiersurgeon.com/index.php/dealing-with-extremely-anxious-patients-during-lasik/

To preface, I am once of these pussies who freaks out when something gets near my eyes.

Anyways, I am seriously considering this. I've checked into it. It is $5500 for the who procedure including having the anesthetist present pre-, during, and post-op. It is also in California so I'd have to knock off a week of work and pay for hotel and flight in addition.

How safe does this sound? Up until I read this, I have never heard of a general anesthetic available for this type of procedure and it in fact hinges on you being awake.

Has anyone had any experience with Diprivan? What can I expect? Could I get raped while I am under or am I still kinda awake? Should I shave my balls for this just to be safe? Sorry, I know this is not ChitChat, but I couldn't resist that one. Serious thread now. Thanks in advance.

why are you going all the way to CA for this? there are plenty of LASIK eye centers/surgeons here that are good.

None that offer a general anesthetic. At least from what I've researched.

Just have them give you some Valium. They could set you on fire and you wouldn't care.

I have tried valium before to test this.

Definitely won't work.

I believe I had propofol drip for my colonoscopy. It works. I remember vaguely waking up and seeing my colon on the screen and asked them to turn it to me so I could see it. Thats it. I, too, would prefer this to being awake.

propofol is strong stuff

depending on the dose you are getting you could be partially awake

actually, you would HAVE to be kept partially awake otherwise you would stop breathing.

we use prop in the ICU for sedation since it wears off really fast.

If anyone has heard of a place that offers these services on the east coast, please bump this thread.

My advice: Get over your fear of things coming near your eyes. $5500 + round trip to California + hotel for a week is probably gonna be like $6-7000 total when you can get it done for like $2000 locally. The whole procedure is like 30 mins long and depending on the process you can be back at work a day or two later.

I'm not too worried about the price right now. This thread is about Diprivan and how it related to the procedure. And if this exact procedure is available closer to the east coast.

I've used halcyon for dental procedures with great success. You would have to play with the dose though. The first few tries didn't do a whole lot for me, but the last time I went they got the dose right, maybe even a little on the strong side, and I don't remember anything about the procedure at all.

I don't know what they gave for my colonoscopy but I was gone, I've got a big blank spot from the time they wheeled me in until I'm halfway back in the car. Any sort of anesthesia really fucks with me guess cause I'm not very heavy. Same for my wisdom teeth getting pulled I've got a blank spot between the drip and being home in bed even though I was obviously conscious in both cases enough to walk and stand on my own.

Honestly just man up. You won't feel it so it'll just seem like things are just very close but not touching. Hell I had PRK and they essentially take a sander to your eyeball but it just felt like they were waving it around in front of me.

^^yeah same for me. They numb your eye up enough. Honestly, the worst part was being really sensitive to light for about a week.

On a slightly serious note, what about rohypnol?

Youre still awake for that. You just don't remember. I'd be afraid of racial slurs or psychotic behavior that may cause injury to the staff and not being able to remember enough to apologize when I come to.

I'll have to make a note of all the drug names mentioned in this thread. I had a ureteral stent removed with a cystoscope on nothing more than local anesthesia. I came out of that doctor's office completely soaked in sweat - like I got caught in a downpour... and despite the anesthesia it still hurt.
