I just settled for a job in a place i like but didn't have the goal of being there and even went out to meet my future team and everyone is excited. It doesn't start until August but they expect me to start performing some tasks now. Another job offer has just arrived for a job in my hometown (where i wanted to be but was afraid i wouldn't get an offer) that starts asap and pays even more. Why would I not take the new job?

What would you do?

How would you explain it to the old job?

I appreciate your interest but I have found a position that I feel offers me a better opportunity at this time. Best Wishes

Well I am worried about letting them all down. They won't be able to fill the position because I lead them on at crunch time. Will they blacklist me?

You're not going to please everyone in your life. If you try to, it's noble, but it will only end up making you suffer. If they blacklist you, they are fucks you'd never want to work for/with anyway.

You aren't even an employee yet and you are worried about upsetting them by leaving 3 months before your start date? Are you even being paid right now? This is a no-brainer.

I was in a similar conundrum when I graduated, I ended up finding a buddy who was equally qualified, introducing him to the boss, and peacing out for the job I wanted. Best of both worlds.

when you're dealing with a question involving your career/long-term future, the standards of what constitutes a dick move are greatly relaxed

you can't sell yourself short careerwise just because you already told a bunch of strangers you'd go work for them...just as you shouldn't keep dating some girl who bores you, just because she's crazy about you

we have to be 100% for ourselves in these situations, and everyone understands that

I'm hearing that location and pay are factors leaning towards the starts immediately job. But which one is better for your career long term? If the hometown job is better for your career too, then it sounds like you definitely need to do that, unless you're just doing it because staying in your hometown is easier but the other job would be better.

Is the place you're turning down a small office? If not, then chances are they aren't going to take it personally. Just go ahead and do it so they can find a replacement.

Yeah, 3 months should be more than enough time to find a replacement. Lots of people are looking for jobs. Referring a contact could help leaving them hanging go over better, but in the end you need to look out for yourself

I'm not sure if someone pointed this out already, but the thread title is a logically impossible scenario.

Take the better job. If you don't, you may regret it and resent the place you work at. That wouldn't be good for anyone.
