apparently it's not possible...

http://wusa9.com/news/article/150645/283/Marshmallow-Peeps-Resist-Scientific-Inspection

Quote :
"(Arizona Republic) -- We can put a man on the moon, but we can't do pathology on a Peep.

Histotechnologist Aprill Watanabe at the Phoenix Translational Genomics Research Institute attempted to cryogenically freeze a Peep and then shave off a tissue sample less than 8-microns thick - narrower than a human hair - so that its cellular composition could be analyzed under a microscope.

But the experiment ran into the limitations of science. The Peep's soft marshmallow innards just could not be frozen.

"We can't do Peep pathology," Watanabe said, after trying for nearly an hour to harvest a Peep tissue sample.

TGen, which normally is trying to cure cancer, was commissioned by The Republic to do this experiment.

Well, perhaps that's not the most precise word. "Commissioned" makes it sound as if we paid them a princely fee. We actually just asked the public-relations and marketing people, who said yes. The scientists were asked later."

The problem is not the peep, you just need a sharper knife.

what are they trying to freeze, though?

the freezing point of a substance is the point at which it's solid, right? when you freeze most things, you're really just freezing the water...i'd assume that peeps don't have a significant amount of water

I think it could be done. She just wasn't cold enough, she tried cutting at -22, but I think you can get a cryosectioner down lower than that. It would also probably work if she tried thicker sections than 8 um.

It was funny reading a laymen's version of cryosectioning though...
