The cig lighter adapter thing continually blows any new fuse I put in it thus from what I can tell leads me to believe there is a short somewhere. Any tips/advise on how to get this fixed as its a damn pain.

get a multimeter, and maybe one of those haynes manuals or something that has a wiring diagram.

id probably get access to the wires behind the power-point or dash, and snip them. measure resistance on the power-point/lighter side to see if thats the problem. i'm not sure what an expected reading would be, but the closer to 0 ohms it is the more chance that it's bad.

otherwise start tracking back and and see if you can see where the wires are meeting up (or where you have a short from power to ground)

If you can get behind it, you can unplug it. No need to snip any wires. Remember, you gotta put back what you take apart.

you can start without tearing anything apart. remove the fuse on the circuit and check the continuity between the base and side terminal in the plug

actually, while your standing there at the fuse you can just check there. no sense in trying to play operation with the lighter plug.

Just unplug it. When it comes time for an inspection its just gonna be a hassle and a waste of time for everyone.

just do what i said the first time: with the fuse removed, turn your multimeter to ohms and set one probe on the bottom conductor of the power thing and the other probe on the side conductor. then tell us what happens. if the resistance drops a lot and approaches zero ohms then you definitely have a short.

so heres an update...everything electronically works great...up until any charger with a usb plug gets plugged in. I've tried 3 of them...they all cause the fuse to blow instantly. All other direct chargers (not with usb ports) work perfect prior to me switching to one of the "other" chargers and the thing blowing.

Whyyyyyyyyyy (and no they arent the cheap overseas chargers that I was able to find some info on)

what are you putting into the usb port? or are you saying that the 3 usb-port chargers are blowing the fuse with nothing in the usb.

and this is why we need complete information, because had you told us that initially we could have ruled out a short in the wiring from the fuse to the power port and could have saved you some time fiddling with a multimeter

i didnt know that initially, right now the only thing is just a usb cable plugged in. it didnt even have anything connected to it.

One can be considered insane if they do the same thing over and over again and expect different results.

^yes, but by altering one thing each time is a mild form of trial and error...the fuse doesnt seem to blow if nothing is plugged in and it just sits there.

sounds like the short is inside the receptacle and is shorted out when something is put in the receptacle. Try doing a continuity test with the battery unhooked and something plugged in and then with nothing plugged in.

these things are really simple and there is not much to fail. If it is bugging you a bunch i would just go ahead and replace it.

btw is this using Verizon branded chargers?
