Kilmer narrates while playing the trumpet in a burning room. He plays Danny Parker, a speed freak addicted to methamphetamine, who hangs out with friends while indulging in drugs. He also moonlights as informant to two dirty cops, Gus Morgan (Doug Hutchison) and Al Garcetti (Anthony LaPaglia). He is trying to set up a large meth score with a notorious drug dealer Pooh Bear (D'Onofrio), an eccentric psychopath who lost his nose to excessive snorting of "Gack" (meth). This is to set up a sting operation.
When he returns home, Danny sheds his clothes and his personality and basks in a past life as a trumpet player named Tom Van Allen. He reveals to an abused neighbor Colette (Deborah Kara Unger) that he was once happily married only to watch as his wife is gunned down by masked thieves.
When meeting with Pooh Bear, Danny tapes a gun to the bottom of his table. Danny becomes fearful when Pooh Bear displays bizarre homicidal behavior.
Danny's parents-in-law track him down. They believe he has sunk into depression after his wife's death. He tells them that he doesn't want their help. As the deal comes closer, it becomes known that Danny is not only working for the police but FBI agents working to take down Morgan and Garcetti, who have been responsible for multiple murders. It's also revealed that they were the men who shot Danny and killed his wife as they robbed a dealer. Danny had started his own investigation when he found out who Morgan was and delved into the underworld to become a believable junkie.
On the night of the deal, Danny leads the FBI to the wrong location with the help of best friend Jimmy (Peter Sarsgaard). Meanwhile, he arrives at Pooh Bear's house. At the dinner table, surrounded by Pooh Bear's armed friends, Danny tries to get the gun he stashed loose. He does so just as tensions rise and one of Pooh Bear's men tries to kill him. Danny frantically kills the rest of the gang but is shot in the chest by Pooh Bear and collapses to the floor.
Pooh Bear, wounded in the leg, goes to take a hit of meth. Morgan and Garcetti arrive to find the massacre. Garcetti kills Pooh Bear, whose drug-filled hypo drops from his hand. Garcetti is then killed by Danny, who has survived with a bulletproof vest. Morgan is shot twice by Danny, who reveals his knowledge that Morgan shot his wife. Morgan is able to snatch away Danny`s gun, but finds it is now empty. Danny suddenly injects Morgan in the neck with Pooh Bear's syringe. He picks up Pooh Bear's pistol and contemplates suicide for a moment, but then shoots Morgan several times and flees.
Back in his apartment, he dons his Tom Van Allen identity again, but is shot by Colette's "boyfriend" (Luis Guzman), who is actually a man Danny ratted out to the police. Collette says she was forced to betray Danny because her daughter was being held hostage. The room is set aflame, and Danny plays one more tune before passing out.
He is saved, however, by Jimmy. After he recovers, he decides to lay the identities of both Danny and Tom to rest.  5/17/2011 3:33:03 PM
