Is there any legal precedent for this? Has anyone else been able to cash in by being a songwriter's "inspiration?"

I somehow doubt it because otherwise there'd be a shit ton of people out there afraid to make music.

Not to be a hipster or anything, but I was listening to Adele in 2009 when no one had heard of her and she was on the CD of an alternative radio station in Texas that supports small bands.
I'm glad she's now recognized as famous and number one on iTunes, but still.

yuffie_chan, I believe you are mistaken. Seventeen million people watched her perform on SNL in 2008. And she was winning Grammy awards at the start of 2009. So it seems unlikely that your encounter with her music on a mix CD in 2009 is remarkable.
