mine is more of an inverted pyramid

or maybe a food column, with all the groups (except the sugar/fat group) in pretty equal proportion

"Goodbye Food Pyramid, Hello Dinner Plate

Whatever you do, don’t call it a pie chart.

The Obama administration is about to ditch the food pyramid, that symbol of healthy eating for the last two decades. In its place officials are dishing up a simple, plate-shaped symbol, sliced into wedges for the basic food groups and half-filled with fruits and vegetables.

The circular plate, which will be unveiled Thursday, is meant to give consumers a fast, easily grasped reminder of the basics of a healthy diet. It consists of four colored sections, for fruits, vegetables, grains and protein, according to several people who have been briefed on the change. Beside the plate is a smaller circle for dairy, suggesting a glass of low-fat milk or perhaps a yogurt cup."

If the food plate is [OLD] to you, then I tip my hat to thee.

the plate idea sounds good because it shows exactly what and how much to eat to stupid idiots (majority of the population).

half filled with veggies and fruits? AWESOME!

so basically it goes back to the way I learned it in '91 except it's a circle instead of boxes

ok

I thought they'd at least size the slices according to recommended intake %

i didnt see the article mention that. they just say 4 slices with some dairy on the side, so I'd assume 4 equal quarters for easier interpretation/pic-insertion

I think it will make a difference for a [very] small percentage of the population by showing them what exactly their lunch/dinner plate should look like.

In general though, a redrawn pictorial will not provide intrinsic desire/motivation to eat right.

If the circle is divided into a quarter veggies, quarter fruit, quarter WHOLE grain, and quarter unprocessed protein/flesh, that's pretty good. If everybody in the US ate like that, billions in health care would be saved annually, and there would be tens hundreds of thousands fewer deaths.

I do wish, though, that they had included a sliver (about a 1/10 th of the circle) of olive oil + nuts. Just that recommendation alone (regardless of one's diet) could avert the deaths of tens of thousands more, annually. But of course, as we know, fat is bad

Quote :
"Some who have seen the logo compared it with a pie chart, though dessert is hardly the association that the administration would like to conjure up. Others likened it to a pizza cut into slices (equally unpalatable for officials). "

i probably consume 2-4 tablespoons of EVOO plus about 2 handfuls of mixed nuts, daily.

yeah, avocado could br placed in that [sadly non-existent] fat sliver.

1) The pyramid is false, according to what we know today. 6 to 11 servings of grain products a day? That's a sure fire recipe for insulin resistance (i.e., obesity, diabetes, heart disease, etc).

2) But let's say the pyramid is a good recipe. I don't think there is any one who doesn't understand it... most people know what is healthy and what isn't (as per the pyramid)... they just choose to eat what they like or crave or can't resist, i.e., junk food and fast food.

3) At the same time, you do have to consider that the pyramid is not a very good design of something that is easy to follow. It requires you to keep track of the number of servings of the different groups you eat daily. The new pictorial will show people what exactly their PLATE should look like at meal time, instead of keeping a running tally of food group servings. You can't argue that that isn't easier to follow.

4) Finally, most people are pretty 'stupid', in most countries. So, regardless of the government's new pictorial guidelines, people will eat what they want to eat. And there will always be people who will eat shit but claim they are following the guidelines:

1/4 plate of white bread/rice
1/4 plate of spam
1/4 plate of french fries
1/4 plate of canned fruit in heavy syrup

Hey, that matches the new guidelines:

1/4 grain
1/4 meat/protein
1/4 veggies
1/4 fruit

!!!

because obviously there is only one diet that is healthy for people.

the problem isn't in the food pyramid/plate/whatever they come up with next. the problem is people have no self control and are too lazy to make their own food and eat out at restaurants 10+ times a week.

i eat 6-11 "servings" of the bread, cereal, rice & pasta group a day. but you know what else, i also eat fruit and vegetables and meat and dairy. i'm not anywhere near obese and have no family history of diabetes or heart disease. i don't think this is a sure fire recipe for me to develop those things.

*facepalm*

If you actually just got rid of the grains category and stopped encouraging low fat dairy, this would be a huge improvement over the previous pyramids.

Not sure I understand the change. I've always thought the pyramid was the government trolling the mass of dumbasses. Apparently, they're not getting enough bites?

It's not even about getting enough exercise, affording healthier foods, or resolving the psychological problems of comfort eating.

Responding to your body is hard? Is it not obvious why your dozing off after lunch or sitting on the toilet for 10 min? For fuck sakes, it's like knowing you need to take a shit or if you are bleeding.
