^ agreed, people from parts of the country that think bbq is a verb need not bother to opine.

Ed Mitchell knows and serves real BBQ

I don't know how you could argue otherwise

i am not saying he doesn, i like his barbecue. its not the best in the state, or the area, but its good.

i am responding to the claim that he is the best, as made evident by the fact that he got invited to a new york barbecue festival. yankees do not decide what good barbecue is, because they don't know what barbecue is.

aaaand, I don't know what that particular competition was like, but most of those type things have people of the industry (read: chefs, grill/pitmasters, and bbq critics) as the judges...

PR people.

Like I said, Greg Hatem has breathtakingly good PR people.

Same reason Raleigh Times was in some food mag as the best burger in NC, when it's not even the best burger in downtown.

Haha, thank you for fully clarifying the troll

RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE, EASTERN BBQ IS KING!!!

(and i honestly like western, south carolina, texas, and cajun styles better than eastern, but it is all good)

Ed Mitchell is from Eastern NC
the guys who started Brother Jimmy's, a NYC based micro-chain of BBQ joints, are from Chapel Hill

NYC BBQ festivals include many styles of BBQ, not just Eastern NC (which is clearly the best, but this should be thoroughly demonstrated to as many people as possible frequently)

you seem unreasonably argumentative about this - almost as if this was some kind of faceless, electronic agora where idiots vent feelings about their own inadequacies through personal attacks and specious reasoning

I mean, what do you want?

on the original point of this thread, i will always pick smithfields over the pit because a combo dark is 6.95 and the equivalent at the pit is what, 11 for the combo plate? (been a while)

nowhere did i mention price, or value. it's simply which establishment serves the better tasting pork bbq.

and it's $8, not $11. you certainly can't compare the $12 pit dinner plate to the $6.95 Smithfield's combo.

a lunch plate at the pit (comparable to smithfields combo) is $7.59.

I didnt read this whole thread, but this sums it up:
Smithfields:The Pit::McDonalds:Five Guys
Smithfields is fast food BBQ...if you want real BBQ, you pretty much go anywhere else.

Also, the answer to all BBQ questions is "Wilbers".

"Smithfields is the McDonalds of BBQ."

I've got to disagree. It's more like the Wendys of BBQ. McDonalds is nasty, but at least Wendys' burgers are somewhat tasty. Smithfields isn't bad per say, it just isn't good in any distinguishing way either. The only reason to eat it is convenience. And yeah, I guess if I ate fast food I'd pick up some Smithfields from time-to-time when I was traveling and needed a bite.

When I'm close to home and just want to grab a cheap quick bite I go to Ole Time.
When I'm close to home and I want to go sit down I'll roll to Coopers (if they're open).
When I want to go sit down with friends/family and talk for a while I'll go to Coopers or The Pit.

For the OP: The Pit > Smithfields. Your friend has bad taste.

The question if the Pits BBQ (not the dining experience or their coleslaw) is better than Smithfield, and frankly it may be slightly better but not drastically so.

I would honestly say the Smithfeilds=BurgerKing and the Pit=Wendys in terms of my liking of their BBQ.
