"What’s the best email subject line we’ve read today? “Nick Offerman’s beard saves the planet.” The Parks and Recreation star, a.k.a. Ron Swanson, has teamed up with Budweiser to promote its “Grow One. Save a Million” campaign, which encourages men to grow beards as awesome as his — and therefore conserve water — in advance of World Environment Day (this Sunday, June 5). According to Budweiser, on average, a man uses 5 gallons of water every time he shaves. The company hopes enough men will take the pledge to put down the razor to save one million gallons of water.

“The only thing manlier than growing a big, burly beard is ripping a big, burly beard off of a charging grizzly with your bare hands,” Swanson Offerman says in a release. “That, and saving the planet. Since no grizzly has had the balls to charge me since I went through puberty, I’ve decided to focus on saving the planet by joining with Budweiser to promote the ‘Grow One. Save a Million’ campaign. Men, if you want to look manly and feel good about conserving water, join me and take the pledge on Budweiser’s Facebook page. And grizzlies, charge me. Just do it. I’m waiting, you babies.”

the average man is pretty dumb and/or lazy apparently. I guess there's a lot of people on the low end pulling it down.

I shave without water and only use the edge of a sharpened pine cone.

I am king.

Some of this water usage must be related to waiting for the water to get hot, for those of us on old school heaters. But even with that, no way in hell can you use that much water without leaving a damn torrent of water going the entire shave. Maybe they're talking about people shaving in the shower?

wtf? I estimate I use about 1 gallon. I normally put that much in the sink (hot) and use it to moisturize my face and to rinse my razor. Which means some dude is running close to 10 gallons? My whole house averaged 21 gallons/day last month.... which means he probably used that before he got out of the house in the morning.

I just checked the water fee schedule for my place. I'm not even breaking the minimum bill barrier Up to 300 cubic feet carries the same $12 bill, even though I'm only using 85 I'm bout to install some sprinklers to spray onto my house to keep it cool during the hot days I can use 3.5x as much water and pay the same bill...

Big deal, a million gallons of water. My plant uses that every day and we are have vastly decreased that amount over the past few years. Good luck saving the environment with fucking marketing ideas.

I'll admit that I use too much water when shaving (and brushing my teeth for that matter) - I let the bitch run!

I also only shave 2, maybe 3 times a week though

^ Recycling paper mill. We recycle about ~1000 tons of paper each day. Takes a lot of water to make that happen and we reuse water as much as possible, but there are processes where we simply have to use fresh water. In the future, we'll reduce it even more and get below 0.5 million a day, but right now the economics do not justify it.

Don't get me wrong though, I am all for saving water and not wasting resources. I'm a big supporter of recycling as long as it is done right and makes sense economically. But this particular gimmick is simply marketing for Budweiser using a big number that many people will mistake as significant.

I shave in the shower sometimes. I try to make it quick, but it could be close to 5 gallons in additional time. When I shave in the sink though, no way do I use 5 gallons.
