I'm going to watch The Wire because of this thread. I've never seen it but heard it was good.

I just started watching for the first time. I'm eight episodes in, and I'm completely hooked. Solid from top to bottom, and every once in a while, there's a scene that will make you go, "Wow. That's brilliant."

^^^season 2 was a bit of a departure from the other seasons in both setting and characters. seasons 3 and 4 are where things get really really really good as the show returns to west baltimore.

I loved the first season of the Wire, stalled on season 2 for some reason though.

While I really enjoy FNL, I'm don't think it warrants mention as one of the 'Best Series in the history of television.' OH LOOK THE LIONS WON ANOTHER CLOSE ONE IN THE FINAL SECONDS OF THE GAME, NEVER SAW THAT ONE COMING Seriously though, while I understand it's a drama, it seems overly heavy on the drama and many scenes are predictable because of this.

For me, Dexter, The West Wing, and the Office are up there...but you gotta break this shit out into categories so the comedies, animated series, news shows etc get theirs too. What about Band of Brothers? 60 minutes? SNL?

I gotta give a shout out to Beavis and Butthead cause that show was the shit back in the day.

and there is obviously no THE SINGLE BEST SERIES....best you can do is make a list of your top 5 or 10 or something

does not compute

season 2 is the most underrated season of the wire imo. it might be my second favorite season, behind season 4 and in a toss-up with season 3

S2 seemed slow because S1 was all about the Towers and they kinda took a big break from that until S3 (for obvious reasons)

There were some really great series before the modern era of television as well, from a time when tv wasnt sullied with the "holy shit" storylines so commonly found in law and order (especially SVU)

Agreed. Great series, but Ziggy Sobotka was really annoying and sort of ruined the second season for me. The series really picked up after he was gone.

People are going to have a hard time even remembering that show in 10 years time. They'll watch the intro on whatever the future equivalent of youtube is and still only have a faint memory.

the original Twilight Zone wins for me.
MASH
Freaks and Geeks
Arrested Development
Saturday Night Live

and I'll probably get blasted for this, but South Park. After about 5 years, I sort of gave up on it. Didn't think it had much intelligent commentary left, but the last 4 years or so have been so damn good. No idea what re-inspired them to that level.

Agreed. I can compile a list of at least 15 shows that are too incredible to have another ranked above it.
