Not talking about Trotski farting ITT

Rather, Da Messiah's got the heavy hand of the government in the business of hawking cheap gas for a consumer that used to enjoy the riches of a free market economy. DaMessiah Loves you. Obey. And find your federally sponsored gas price quotes here

Socialism was never allowed to flourish in Greece; when an actual labor movement occurred in the 40's, the UK (aided by US military transport) put it down. What you see nowadays is a "socialist party" which is about as socialist as its name, unless you also take names like "Democratic Republic of North Korea" seriously.

Then again socialism isn't necessarily about strong central authority or top-down control of economy. There's a plethora of positions that sit toward the libertarian end of the spectrum, which is bottom-up in nature.

Uh? What?

What is this abortion of a thread about. It's a shitty constructed government website that allows you to pick your state from a map and it provides you with links to other websites where people (you and me) actively publish the prices of gas stations.

Just can this shit.

Look, no ordinary person is going to waste their time becoming an expert on greek socialists when some dude on the other end of the internet can form an argument first and then he can see if it entertains him.

That you have no ready argument isn't surprising here.

And I googled that shit before posting. You google it and tell me which terms you used and how many pages deep you have to go before finding shit.

What the fuck are you even slobbering about? The intervention in Greece is known to everybody who has taken at the very least 5 minutes to educate themselves about US foreign policy in the 20th century. Look up "ELAS" and do some fucking reading. There's no "argument" to be made here. If you want sources I can dig out some books and pull the references for you. If you want to be a big boy and take responsibility for your *own* ignorance then use google

Only an academic elitist would make a statement like this. Chit Chat isn't fucking academia you dumbass.

On an unrelated topic though because I'm curious, where does the funding for your research come from? Or, am I wrong that you aren't working on a PHd?

This is why you need to post some starting points, because you framed it like this

Quote :
"when an actual labor movement occurred"
, when wikipedia starts it off ELAS like this

Quote :
"was the military arm"

But I'm just beginning to read, so maybe this was just like...well, not really related to the labor movement. And maybe the British during their invasion to fight this military arm took the opportunity to crush labor...im just speculating because I didn't read it yet.

"Killing Hope", William Blum
"Counter-Insurgency: Myth and Reality in Greece", David Horowitz
"The Slate of Europe", Howard K. Smith

Some books you won't read or consult

Also known as common knowledge to a majority of the world lol

You're always "just speculating". Every time I've encountered you on these boards in the past few weeks it's been a stunning display of your ignorance, and an even more stunning display of your immaturity as you cry and get upset when you get called out

So now only people in academia are expected to know basic facts about US foreign interventions?

Bottom line is that by tacitly endorsing price quotes and spotting the supposed best value of the unleaded petrol market based on geography, the taxpayers are paying for web servers to support these stupid websites.
The Federal gov't is spending tax payer dollars to provide free advertisement for third party vendors and therefore is, AGAIN, manipulating the market while supporting the same policies that keep gas prices high and create this self-fulfilling prophesy of intervention in the marketplace and high gas prices.

WELCOME TO THE AMERICAS. CHANGE ABOUNDS. HERE ARE YOUR GASES PRICES AND FOOD STAMPS. AVERT YOUR GAZE!

^^^^^^^^^I have never heard of those books or the intervention in Greece in the '40s, but it does sound suspiciously like when Churchill asked Truman (unsuccessfully) and then Eisenhower (successfully, via John Foster Dulles) to use the CIA to overthrow Mossadeq and re-install the Shah Reza Pahlavi because the democratically-elected government of Iran was about to nationalize the oilfields and rip BP away from the sweet sweet profits of the unfair deals it had made with the Shah's father when he was the Shah.
Anyway here's a relevant link: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Greek_Civil_War

^^^^^^^indeed, he makes my side look bad
Quote :

It's "Democratic People's Republic of Korea" (the South is officially the "Republic of Korea" and that name actually fits); also on a related note, the Communist Party of China is Communist in name only; starting under Deng Xiaoping the country became very business-friendly and subsequently experienced substantial economic growth.

By the way, they absolutely LOVED that movie 300. It was still playing in theatres like six months after it had already left the US theatres. I kind of LoLed and also posed with a lifesize cardboard cutout of Gerard Butler in garb. They LOVED that shit over there. Go figure. Xerxes approaches with his socialist army you know.

^^^ Yes it's quite similar because, as usual, it's the same old people up to the same old bullshit. The Dulles brothers were extremely effective at pushing their insane "anti-communist" stance, which amounted to attempt at destroying any regime that wasn't blindly pro-US (to the detriment of democracy and local interests).

^^ You're going to have to do better than some relationship from my early-to-mid 20's. That was 6 years ago; why do you remember and retain so much about my love life? *I* can barely remember I dated that woman, yet it's something you readily remember about me. Why can't you absorb important facts this way?

Not even close to my personal best but I'm not here to wag dicks with you, and you're doing a bad job distracting from your hilarious lack of knowledge about our own country

If you can't think of near 2 dozen cases of anti-democratic US intervention (often against nationalist or vaguely socialist, pro-labor movements) then you need to hit the books. Or you could just enjoy your boats or whatever and ignore whether or not the system that granted you those privileges is necessary or ethical

Why? I can think about tons of shit that you'd be lost trying to do. I'm an electrical engineer. If it every becomes truly necessary for me to have the type of knowledge you have regarding these subjects then I think we are fucked for many different reasons. Simply, I've just got better things to do with my time than to attain the level of knowledge you have about an economic system that at best hasn't seemed to produce a better result than little ole capitalism.

Yeah like post a lot on the internet and display your ignorance to everybody who knows better. Forget about the actual causes; just point to the fact that socialism hasn't thwarted capitalism yet and pretend this means one system's better than the other. No reason to think hard, here, you're an electrical engineer and you have better things to do (like applying wooden formalisms that were handed to you; boy you're a clever one!)

I took an entire semester on 20th century US foreign policy and have never heard of it. Not saying it's not true but I am saying that whatever role we may have played in it was not deemed important enough to include in a course solely built around US intervention in other countries.

For someone who simply doesn't have time even if I really had the desire to go seek out this type of knowledge, it's certainly a reasonable filtering method. If I'm scanning for info on whether Linux is a viable alternative to Windows, I'm gonna go try it. If I'm scanning and find that BeOS sucks, I'm not going to bother.

I asked you folks for some good examples of where socialism is a clear win...crickets.
