This is the shit that frustrates me. People at wall mart always ask people for the receipt when they leave with large items that don't fit in the bag. It happens to white and black people equally. Just show her the damn receipt. Nothing to do with her being black.

Technically, at Walmart or any other store that is not a club with a membership, no one HAS to show the receipt on the way out. If you decide it's worth standing your ground on that, they'll call the police and they will eventually find that out. Once you've paid for the item, ie at the cash register, it's yours and you don't have to prove anything to anyone beyond that point.

Long story, but I was living in Germany for about the past 8 years and had to come back to the US due to being completely fucked over by an employer.

I have been living with my sister for the past two months in PA. She has a big family and goes to Wall Mart regularly, and we always get asked to show the receipt when she leaves with goods that weren't bagged. Happens every time without fail. Which is why I thought that the current video going viral was crazy, insane and stupid. I would have just shown them the damn receipt before the cops shows up. Who voluntarily decides to wait for the cops to come around? Fuck that.

I will say that sometimes policy can be construed as racism.

When I worked at Best Buy, we had a hard rule that if the credit card did not have a signature on the back or if it said see ID on the back, then you had to ask for the person's license. One day I had a white lady in front of me pay with a credit card, and it was signed, so I swiped it and let her go about her business. Behind her was a black guy with his kids. When he handed me his credit card, it was not signed, so I asked for his ID.

Well that did not sit well with him. To be clear, he was very polite and I don't think he would have started any sort of video recording, but he was mostly constructively pointing out what he thought was racism. I explained our policy, to which he responded "I hope you know that I am a cop.", to which I responding :shrug: it's our policy and her card was signed.

He debated the entire time but I could still tell he felt slighted. I felt badly but at the same time I hadn't done anything wrong. But my guess is that guy gave his kids a lesson on racism and how to look out for it, which is a good story overall but unwarranted here.

NC ABC stores have a policy that require a customer to produce an ID card if they're paying by a credit card. It is not applied consistently.

We're all tribal, or most of us are. Looking back 20 years ago I was definitely racist. I used to be dismissive of my white privilege; but after observing our country from Bush's last two years in office, through the Obama years and now with Trump, I can't help but see how fucked up our society is towards people of color.

When I interact with a POC who's ignorant/foolish, a little voice in my head says "this person probably didn't have the resources I did, give em a break and move on."

I've become prejudice towards old white southern men... like my dad.

I know it's not right, but it is what it is.
