I think my (of three years) girlfriend's parents at one point saw her as "dating down" with me.

Her parents are, respectively, a head aerospace engineer at a naval-air base and a national aircraft specialist, and a high-ranking female civilian technological intelligence officer for the Marines in the Pentagon. They are "new money" and they do not live lavishly, but they now have a 250k+ income and are starting to realize it. My family have been school teachers and artists for generations (but mostly teachers), and have a combined household income of 80k.

And of course, I'm a humanities major and want to go to grad school. She is a science major, though she doesn't have any aspirations outside of an undergrad degree. She wants to follow me where I go for grad school and has no problem with that. I think her parents... might.

EDIT: I should have clarified that this was how the situation seemed when we were just dating. Over time and huge exposure to her parents I think they've warmed up to me (possibly because I'm nicer to them than their own daughter) and don't think ill of me or our relationship, though they might be opposed ideologically to my degree and desired professions.

EDIT DOS: tl;dr 1) My girlfriend's parents are rich pentagon officials, 2) My parents are elementary school teachers, 3) Class conflict, academic conflict.
