Too soon to tell. Could just be ddos against mtgox. That will hold trading and cause huge swings.

MtGox suspended trading. It's more like $79. Here's another exchange: https://www.bitstamp.net/

I'm not sure if it has been mentioned yet, but the idea of a crypto-currency hit the public consciousness because of this book:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptonomicon

Bruce Schneier helped with the cryptography parts of the book.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Schneier

Bruce coined the term "Security Theater" when talking about Homeland Security, and was the inventor of blowfish. He did the Pontifex cipher for the book, that uses only a deck of cards.

I actually did not know that about Cryptonomicon. I've read 4 Stephenson novels but figured that one was boring. I'll have to check it out.

I left my last few coins in my wallet and will just save them for a rainy day, if they ever shoot up again. I never caught it at my magic $200 mark to get rid of these last ones.

if i had been so dumb as to buy some when i posted that, i'd probably be selling them right now for about a 67% ROI.

i'm also not sure what you're implying - countless people have gotten rich speculating, including pretty much all of the bitcoin early adopters.

i'm certainly not buying any at $100 a pop, but had they continued to drop (or should they plummet again in the future), i'm willing to gamble on them.

^ I THINK the point was that currency's main purpose shouldn't be speculating. The fact that this is how it is, isn't a good sign. Anyone who thinks otherwise might be fooling themselves.

Lot of bitcoin news recently for some reason

http://www.forbes.com/sites/louiswoodhill/2013/04/11/bitcoins-are-digital-collectibles-not-real-money/

Also for something that is supposed to be an improvement on money, it doesn't really help me keep track of the obligations owed between two parties -- I don't know what it's worth and nerds are creating this shit out of thin air.

I had to go Bitcoin -> BTC-E -> BitInstant -> Paypal, but dinner for my wife and I, and a tank of gas courtesy of bitcoin tonight.

The fees hurt like a mother. After a couple of mistakes on my part, like trying to use Mt.Gox and Dwolla, I ended up with $90.26 deposited to my paypal account for 1.0005 btc.

There is still 23.70011798 USD in my BTC-E account, so I will move that here in a few minutes when I move another 1.0005 btc through.

I ran into their verification process, and was too lazy to deal with it. Plus, I have a paypal debit card, so that was my ultimate goal destination.

I have like 1.3 BTC. I offloaded most of it at $180 and more of it at about $110. When it hits a bottom and "stabilizes" could be the best time to buy back, where there is a market...

You are correct. There's a psychological wall at $100 now, so when people see it in double-digits they'll buy. I find it comforting that they're going after criminal enterprises directly, rather than outlawing the currency all together.

i just noticed how i previously complained about not having a mt gox alternative for easy BTC purchases. well, i now use coinbase, which is the easiest way i've found to securely purchase bitcoins via linked US bank account. they charge a 1% fee per USD to BTC transaction.

Thought you guys might find this interesting. I got my first Jalapeno from Butterfly Labs today.

This is so low powered, even though it is like 10 video cards, it will only generate like $50 a month, but it's neat to play with. It's currently hashing at 5.2 GH/s.

The power supply it came with is rated at ~100 watts, so not terrible. It's certainly got a better hashing/wattage ratio than a video card.

From Page 1:

"Look, I get that this appeals to the geek in everyone, and the anti-establishment nature of it kind of makes you feel like you're sticking it to the man, but a currency only has value if people have confidence in it and any confidence that the average person had in bitcoin is now toast.
