Yeah, I can see how committing a felony and giving up your freedom would be the better choice.

With the cost of medical care these days he'd have to get pretty lucky via the charities to fix his problems. Food and shelter he could get sure, but not real medical care. The really dumb thing about this as far as being a taxpayer goes is we could have just paid for his health care but now we're paying to house him in a jail, too.

Because he only demanded $1, he was charged with larceny from a person. Still a felony, the count doesn’t carry as much jail time as bank robbery."

larceny from a person? he might not even go to prison

i'd just get it looked at, pay for it via credit cards, then declare bankruptcy.

i mean what does he have to lose?

Its gonna suck to get 50000hours of community service and a P.O.

I always said if I ended up homeless and destitute, I would rob a store/bank and just wait for the police so I can collect my 3 meals a day and a bed to sleep on.

Looks like this guy's thinking wasn't too far off

And he said he would do the crime again if he didn't get jail time. So eventually he'll get it

I'd consider going to jail for more than a few months to be a terrible experience. Not that I couldn't cut it there or that the conditions are torturous; it's just the thought of being controlled in every way that I absolutely hate. The idea that someone would willingly give up their freedom in exchange for food or medical care is absurd to me.

Good luck getting another job (you know, that thing that gives most people money to pay for their healthcare) after becoming a convicted felon. He just threw any chance of bettering himself out the window.

^ I'll be sure to drink a cold beer on the beach in your honor while you sit in a cell getting free food and a crappy bed to sleep on.

I guess some people would rather be in jail and alive than die earlier a free man

Sadly, shit like this happens all the time. It is really common up north for homeless people to commit petty crimes at the beginning of winter so they have a roof over their heads during the cold months.

When was the last time you heard of someone being denied medical care that they needed to save their life? They just do the work and then send you a huge bill afterwards. This guy didn't want to deal with a huge bill and he apparently opted out of insurance. He didn't seek out care from free or low cost clinics and he didn't seek out charities to help pay for whatever treatments he needs. Instead he robbed a bank so that he can burden the taxpayers with his problem. Take some ownership of your own problems people.

ftfy

^^The guy realized that we're not close to being done with June and we've already had temperatures in the mid 90s for nearly a month. He was probably looking for some AC before August hits and breaks every record.
