I'm looking for some fellow North Carolinians to rideshare to Burning Man this year. Coming from Raleigh, NC. I have an 82 Diesel Mercedes Wagon in sound condition we can take out there. The car will get at least 24 miles to the gallon if not 28. Plenty of room for three total passengers and our gear. The car has a roof rack plus I'm hoping to get a small tow along trailer. Please have a license and money to split the cost of fuel. If you're interested please contact me here or on Facebook(preferred).... I'd also consider you if you live in a neighboring state.
OR
If you know any folks who are going this year and are trying to find a way out there Thanks.

By my calculations, even estimating 28 MPG, your rideshare can expect to pay $200 per person just in fuel. At that point it's almost time to start considering flying. 6/22/2011 4:41:04 PM |

^ The problem with flying, is that you're spending a week in the desert and everything you need, you have to take with you. ie; Food, bike, tent, water, clothes, etc. Obviously I cant bring all these things along on the plane and it wouldnt make sense to buy them new in Reno considering I already have everything here. I also think it will be fun to drive cross country considering I've never visited any of the States between here and there. 6/22/2011 4:50:37 PM |

i just got an image of someone trying to stuff a tent into an overhead bin, and the tent opening up and causing a ruckus on the plane 6/22/2011 4:52:42 PM |

It will all be very scenic until around Kentucky, then it's just going to be 20 miserable hours of nothing.
I assume you'll take I80 through Wyoming, which is decent scenery, but you'll pass maybe 3 towns in 6 hours.6/22/2011 5:11:15 PM |

The only thing you might not fit in your carry-on and one checked bag would be the bike and I suspect there are options for that when you get to Burning Man. Heck, you could probably check one bag between three people to carry the camping equipment and carry everything else in your carry-on.
It certainly doesn't make sense to truck food and water across the country. I appreciate the road trip aspect of it if you just want to see some of the country though.

If you've never driven across the country, do it. One of the best experiences of my life. Make sure to build a day or two extra to stop and see stuff off the interstates though. 6/22/2011 5:29:30 PM |

pulling a trailer across the country in a 30 year old car loaded down with people and equipment.

Mercedes-Benz cars are known from their reliability. My daily driver is an 85' gasoline powered S class with 150,000 miles and it drives like new. These vehicles were built to be worked on and repaired if and when theres a problem. So with that said, if the car is in good condition and mechanically sound, theres no reason why it would be a bad idea to take it on a cross country trip. Mercedes diesels are known to go 300K-400K miles if properly maintained. As far as towing is concerned, diesel engines produce greater torgue than their gas counterparts because of their higher compression ratios. They're actually ideal for towing small loads. I'm considering towing about 200 lbs max. Another advantage is the fact that the car is a wagon so the load is distributed evenly over a longer body. The car also has a vegetable fuel system which is installed but not currently operational. If I were to get that up to par before August I could ride on recycled veggie with free fuel in tow. Cheers...

that old mercedes diesel only makes 180 ft*lb of torque with the biggest engine
which isn't much more than a 2011 4-cylinder camry 6/26/2011 5:02:01 PM |

Wait, wait. You are going to take all of the veg fuel with you that you need to get there and back? 7.3 lbs per gallon for biodeisel, 2800 miles one way, at 28 mpg you are going to need 200 gallons on biodeisel. Do you really plan on towing 1460 lbs of fuel?
Towing 200lbs? what are you going to tow it in? the trailer will weigh 200 lbs.
put a roof rack on that car, mpg will drop 4-5 mpg.
In no way is it smart or economical for you to take this car. 6/27/2011 7:35:48 AM |

^^ I hear there is a really nice one owned by a guy down by the river. I believe he's some sort of motivational speaker? But he's hard up for cash. $2000 and its yours.
984, remember that number, that's the amount (on the lowest end) you are gonna spend in fuel alone. Kiss that money good bye. Better yet, give it to me. I'm sure I could make better use of nearly a grand.] 7/1/2011 6:47:40 PM |

You guys are so silly. Not everything in life is a pissing contest. And whether or not driving would be a bad idea is relative to the amount of time I have to do so and my financial health. Fortunately for me, I've got both. One things for sure and that is, come August 29th I'll be at Burning Man while some of you will still be here trying to prove your superiority to strangers on a message board. Enjoy that.... 7/4/2011 4:02:11 PM |
