I'm about to downgrade my TV service from the Digital Tier with TWC to just broadcast cable.
According to the rep, that means I won't have any type of box, only the cable coming directly in the line and in theory pluggin into my TV.
I have a receiver that has everything plugged up to it, and I'd prefer to keep it that way.
Would I be able to use one of those digital converter boxes that they had the coupons for several years ago to use with an antenna? I purchased two while I could just in case I ever needed one, and I'd much rather have that box convert it to something I could plug into the receiver instead of having to plug the cable into my TV, and then run the sound from the TV back down to my receiver.
I've tried looking up information, but it seems very few people are attempting to do this.
I had a little antenna that I tried hooking up, but in my area I was just getting garbage reception, and I don't mind paying $10 a month for the basic channels as opposed to the $80 some I'm paying now and barely use it. 6/22/2011 11:40:09 AM |

The converter boxes are converting from digital to analog for older TVs. What you're trying to do is convert something from analog to digital over (I assume) HDMI. That's not what those converter boxes do. There are boxes out there that convert analog to HDMI, but a) they're expensive and b) the analog source is always component. I'm not sure I've ever seen one that splits an analog coax signal up like that. Regardless, having an extra converter box in the equation is way more obtrusive than running one audio cable from your TV to your receiver, IMO anyway.] 6/22/2011 11:54:10 AM |

Yeah, just run an optical cable from the TV to the receiver and be done with it.

Having a TV that was on the cusp and doesn't have a optical out, i'm assuming the "line out" function is the same thing? 6/22/2011 9:34:20 PM |

Probably. What kind of connector does it look like? Or what is the model number of the TV? You could probably find the manual online if you don't have to original somewhere. That should tell you the exact specs. 6/22/2011 9:53:08 PM |

It looks like a RCA plug. I haven't had a chance to pull out the TV and look up the model number, but it was an old costco brand from 06 or 07ish 6/29/2011 6:42:51 AM |

IT's a Sceptre X37S-Komodo
This is straight out of the manual:
Connecting Line Out Port If you have better speakers, which you would like to connect directly to the TV, you can do so via the Line Out port. You can also connect a subwoofer to the TV’s direct Subwoofer Out port for better bass. If you have a receiver, it is recommended that your subwoofer and speakers be connected to the receiver instead. The AV out is designed to output video signal to another TV.
I'm not positive if that means I can drive the line out port into an input on the receiver, and have the receiver dump the sound into the speakers.
But it is a straight up Red/Yellow/White plug. 6/29/2011 9:27:42 PM |

what you want is a box with a QAM tuner and ATSC tuner. I have one I will sell. http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?InvtId=LST-3510A-R&AID=10440852&CJPID=361116&cm_ven=CJ&cm_ite=REDIRECT-ProductSpecific_Text_9-11-2006&cm_pla=361116&cm_cat=358129
One of these gems. PM if you are interested. I'm not selling for typical tww prices as I use it during super heavy storms when directv fades. 6/29/2011 10:01:40 PM |
