ok...
I saw the movie years ago.
I've recently started watching stargate universe, and it seems pretty good. i'm also concurrently watching SG1. (both on netflix on demand)
When i was in Vegas for my honeymoon, i saw them filming an episode of stargate atlantis, which I haven't seen.
Anyone else want to pick up these series on netflix and discuss?
SG1 so far seems fairly cheesy and episodic, as opposed to the arching nature of universe. How does atlantis compare? and what about the TV movies and whatnot? 6/23/2011 6:08:46 PM |

Atlantis is cheesier than the SG1
when the SG1 team becomes composed of about half the cast of Farscape, that means you should have stopped watching about a season back
Universe is completely different from the other two 6/23/2011 6:49:05 PM |

really? SGU seems really good... reminds me of battlestar galactica mixed with the ST:Voyager that should have been. 6/23/2011 8:43:31 PM |

I started watching SG:1 on netflix four weeks ago for these reasons:
1) No Epic sci fi on television. Vampire and monster shit does not count. 2) Wanted to get into some filler series before the entire Star Trek library comes online later in july.
I'm currently on S6 and my experience is as follows:
S1-S3.5 - Very Episodic and generally terrible. Apophis was a clown of a villain and Major Carter was seemingly an expert in a new field in practically every other show. None of the characters have settled into a routine or really filled a mold on the team. Plus, O'Neil comes off as a assclown and not a competent leader.
S3.5-S6 - Carter is still an idiot but is foiled pretty well by O'Neil who stops her from going on Trek-like technobable rants on a regular basis. The story lines themselves switch to a more arc format and the series stops taking itself too seriously. You'll definitely pick up on light-hearted jabs at Star Trek, and even previous SG1 episodes on a pretty regular basis.
They also stop cycling through Gou'ald system lords and settle on a pretty competent villain. Unlike every Star Trek series not named DS9, SG1's story lines and events have long lasting impact with the series revisiting earlier events with regularity and overall continuity is much improved. I don't want to spoil too much, but several episodes in here provide a pretty awesome mix of discovery / lore / psuedo-science and action. I'd also like to specifically note that the CGI starts getting waaaaaaaaaaay better and this helps improve the overall tone and feel of the series. To put it another way, I could barely force myself to sit through Season 1 and 2, but by the end of 3 I started looking forward to every session.
I haven't made it to the end of S6 yet but in doing a peak of the story synopsis of future episodes, the intensity continues.
Plus, Ben Browder joins the cast later on. Win.

How long ago were you in vegas? Unless it was a while ago, how were they filming an episode of Atlantis, that was cancelled a while ago. 6/23/2011 9:09:31 PM |

HOLY SHIT
I'm on that episode! (I found it on youtube and looked through the crowd)
I have a black shirt on and am messing with my hat towards the left side of the wraith. (I had to look at it a few times to make sure it was me.)

I still think SGU gets so much undeserved hate. It really develops into an awesome show and I was one of the few people I know that actually kept watching it after the first 10 episodes. I don't understand why people compare it to BSG like its a bad thing either. BSG was fucking awesome and if a show is like 75% as good then I would gladly watch it. I think its such bullshit that shows like Hawaii Five-O could rack up 8+ million viewers when SGU scrapped by 1 million or so every week. There is no way Hawaii Fucking Five-O is 7 million viewers better than SGU.
SG1 is classic. It will always be a favorite of mine but I'd say like 40-50% of the episodes could be skipped over completely in a binge watching fest. I liked Ben Browder in place of O'Neil though. It was a nice change. As someone mentioned earlier, the props/CGI in the early seasons were ungodly horrible. see:
I really wanted SGA to be my favorite because the Ancient story lines were always the most interesting to me. But they really just focused on the wraith and the whole hybrid human/wraith bullshit. I like the four characters a lot as well. Shepherd, McKay, Teyla, and Ronon were a great combo. The Teal'C/Ronon episode was awesome as shit too.
In general though, if you watch SG and expect top quality acting and TV action, then you are bound to not like it. It's sci-fi for fucks sake.

I just loved how SG1 and SGA series mixed together so well. Specially when they aired back to back, the story played off each other, really felt you were immersed with the stargate universe very well. However, the actual SGU really didn't do that very well and why I never really accepted it as a good offshoot, which is what they were trying to go for. I still watched SGU though. 8/7/2011 9:35:47 PM |

damn I forgot about that rant. I'm rewatching all of stargate now with http://www.gateworld.net/ It's basically a season a month and all the movies. I'll probably skip over episodes and watch half of each season just to speed up the process 8/8/2011 12:15:09 AM |

Just finished off finale of SGU. Hope they get something else Stargate related on TV, as this was a shitty fucking way to end the totality of the Stargate Universe. And I enjoyed SGU. It was "different", but honestly I thought that SGA was getting fucking stale. And I wish that "General O'Neill" would have popped up every now and again on SGU when they went back to Homeworld Command. I did enjoy the episode with Rodney showing up.
Oh and unlike others who have followed this for years, I owned the original movie and watched it multiple times, but never saw SG-1 until much more recently. I picked up SG-1 Season 1, Disc 1 on 3/07/06 on Netflix and I have fairly constantly had some form of Stargate to watch for the last 5 years straight.
