We have summer students too in our lab this summer. And I always get picked to be their mentor

I know that I can never be a teacher as a career, I have little patience.

Forgot about this thread. Got like 10 of them in my branch alone last week. Wide eyed and bushy tailed.

Yeah, it takes a while. Seems like by the time they settle in and get their hands around a project, theyre heading back to school

i remember feeling this way when i was interned in college. it took maybe a month or more before i was comfortable with what i was doing and before my bosses were comfortable turning me loose and giving me some responsibility. and the internship lasted probably 2 months.

I guess we have our new batch. One just came up to my office, and introduced himself. He then spouted off the verbal version of his resume when I asked "hey, how's it going?"

^ he wanted to show that he was multiculturally aware and wanted to make sure that you understood that he wanted to make a good impression on you too in the event that you maintained a seat on the hiring committee representing the interests of diversity in the staff

Most likely strategy....can't forget about the diversity card.....Better give this guy my resume too, better safe than sorry.

You should consider yourself lucky.

Our summer intern kind of froze up for a week when I asked him to draft something for us. Granted, structural drafting can be intimidating as shit for the first time, but he never asked any questions or anything. Not even when prodded to do so (four times).

I suggested to my boss we let him go into the field with some of the other engineering groups at our facility so that he at least gets some useful experience. What's a college sophomore know about engineering? My group is the least interesting place for an intern to work.

I still think of the one guy as an intern even though he has worked here for a year as a regular employee

if you get on permanent with a company, you're still the intern until another intern starts

companies are getting a tax break for hiring interns for the summer. I think it's around $1,400 per summer intern in the new tax law. Thank Trump.

I think it's around $4,000 for perm hires this year. Seeing a lot of sleezy companies hire people in sales. I'm sure they're planning to jack up the metrics next year and keep only the top performers.

$8,000 a month? Not bad for pushing papers.
