Ok open to other ideas that aren't trucks now.

Is a Wrangler a total joke as a tow platform? Of course the boat I would be towing is rather small.

you could tow a boat with a volvo wagon if the trailer was braked. since you're only looking a bumper tow type stuff, check out the 5 series wagon. my 540 can tow 4400lbs braked load. the way I saw it, was im going to driving this thing for many hours at a time so it damn well better be comfortable and inviting enough that others would want to share the journey/gas with me.

porsche cayenne, dodge sprinter (if you hook up the inside), nicer european wagons, even nicer minivans should all be both in your price range and have superior comfort and AV to most trucks. i've read once you start getting much above 75% of the weight of the vehicle with what you're towing you want to go after something designed with towing in mind

^^ depends on the year, and the model, the longer the wheel base the better.

if you load the trailer wrong on a short wheel base one... you're going over.

2000 lb towing capacity on the short wheelbase models; 3500 lbs on the long wheelbase ones IIRC.

I did drive a F150 Crew yesterday. It's drive way bigger than it looks. I drove a tahoe around for years and it doesn't even compare to how big the truck felt. F150s might be out, or at least I need to find a regular extended cab. I need to find a GM to drive.

it was surprisingly powerful but drove like a barge.
But, as a ford guy, i would def get a tundra lol

yeah i know that

what i'm saying is, aren't the crew cab and ext cab trucks the same overall length? i think they just take the extra cab length of the crew cab off of the front of the bed.

get you a 3rd-gen cummins dodge 2500 4x4. $15k should get you one in good shape so you're not worried about all that "dodge" stuff wrapped around the motor

something like
http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/2453437845.html
http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/2452656578.html

orrrr even better, save you some money and get a 1st or 2nd gen bulletproof 12V. Just as much truck that'll last you at least as long.

majority of ford supercrews are the same length as ext cabs just with a shorter bed....there are some long bed(6.5' not a true long bed) supercrews out that are on a longer wheelbase but they are fairly rare

I don't really have any experience with the later models, I bought a 2nd gen 3500 after Jeepman planted the Cummins seed in my head and now every other truck I drive (admittedly usually half-ton or gas models) feels like a boat or a toy.

I love that hard suspension, sure it's a little rough on beat-up dirt roads but I'm aware that I didn't buy a Lincoln. Reminds me what it is that I'm driving.

^^ I agree with that but beauty is more than sheet-metal deep

paying over 15k for a 5 year old dodge with over 170k on a stock transmission is not the smartest thing to do with your money....

towing a small skiff and everything else he needs to do does not warrant the need for a diesel.....get a 04 and up f150 for 15k and be done with it...that dodge will need a trans very soon

want:
full size
v8
4 doors/double cab or w/e (carseat use)
<= $30k
looks good (mostly rules F150 out for me)

Tundra currently in the lead

I've got an '06 tundra, '16 F150, '16 tundra, and '17 titan (through work)

The old tundra has been great, except the guy who drives it sucks at life and runs into things. Otherwise it's great for a 12+ year old truck.

My favorite is my daily driver F150. I've got the extended cab (2+2 doors) and my daughter and car seat fit fine. When I have another kid or my daughter just gets older it'll probably be nice to have 4 real doors, but that's not now. It's much more comfortable, drives better, comes with better stuff than even the second level tundra.

Also, it was a pretty big deal that I couldn't adjust the tundra seats down lower, and I'm not even really tall or anything (6'3 ish). It was more expensive than the tundra though. Probably best bang for your buck is the tundra (of what we have) I just don't like it as much.

The titan sucks dick. I mean, for a work truck it's OK I guess, except that some bricks ripped the bed up which hasn't ever been a problem. It just doesn't sound good, drive good, but it was cheap and they threw a bunch of extra stuff in to get us to buy it.

Drove a 17 Ram 1500 today (and a jacked up 2500). 1500 was a really nice riding truck. Probably going to target a 16-17 1500 Express with the 5.7. Tundra still in play.

Haven't driven a GM yet..which ones should I focus on?

what do you mean which ones? a half ton GM is a half ton GM. do you need a 3/4 ton truck?

1/2 ton, full size. isn't that what the 1500 and Tundras are classified as?

which ones like a GMC or Chevy and what model

the GMC Sierra and the Chevrolet Silverado are the same truck. just go with whichever looks better to you. You said you want a 4 door with a V8. that makes the search pretty simple.

and skip the 4wd unless you think you really need it. not worth the additional upkeep just to ride around town.

Thanks. Definitely don't need 4wd, but the v8 would nice in case I have to tow a boat around.

Silverados look nice

I wouldn't get a full size pickup without a v8. The v6s get the same or worse fuel mileage and won't pull a greasy string out of a cat's ass.

[Edited on April 8, 2018 at 9:34 PM. Reason : the ford v6 with the turbos is supposed to be ok, but turbo goes out and it's $$$$]

i have a '15 ram. i love it. of course i had an '08(7 maybe, i don't remember) silverado before that and liked it just fine. when i went looking for this one, i had similar requirements as you (full size/v8/ext cab +/4wd) and didn't really discriminate based on brand. i also don't discriminate on looks too much. i'll drive a goddamn neon green truck with pink stripes if the price is right. i know when i was in the market a couple years ago, used toyotas were significantly more expensive than any other brand for the same basic setup (and local to me chevys were overpriced for some damn reason. i guess all the high school kids around here love chevy or something.)

if you live in/near raleigh you really don't need 4wd, so just save some money and don't get it. if i was you i'd just look for the best deal with the criteria you've outlined and not be tied to any one brand/make in particular. personally i think the latest generation GM trucks look the worst of all of them. i think they had a great look with their 07 facelift, but each update since then has been a downgrade for me.

and like NRR said, don't get a full size gas truck without a v8. it's completely pointless.

The Allison is the best hd transmission, with the aisin just having some gear ratio weirdness with the Cummins torque managed power delivery. For 1/2 ton trucks, SUVs, etc the zf8 is the best by far.

Ford's been using it for a year and a half, and I've driven quite a few of them. It's a decent transmission, skips gears under light and normal acceleration which freaks people out, it's had pump noises and some harshness that have caused some to be replaced. Gm will have the same hardware problems but will have shitty programming on top of it. It really does wake up the 5l without needing 3.73s like the 6 speed did, but the eb motors didn't gain a ton imo.
