How is this different from sales tax that NC charges on amazon purchases? 6/30/2011 9:28:53 AM |
BobbyDigital Thots and Prayers 41777 Posts user info edit post |
NC doesn't charge sales tax on amazon purchases. NC requires collection of sales tax for NC based affiliates, and requires individuals to report and pay sales tax on items purchased online, where sales tax was not collected.
But yes, it is the same thing, and it's equally stupid. Amazon did the same thing, and ended affiliate programs for all NC based affiliates as well.
I titled the thread as such, because there are many more examples of California's economic stupidity that can be posted.
hopefully NC doesn't continue to try to be California East. 6/30/2011 9:44:19 AM |

^explain to me how eBay is going to save California from the economic ruin they are currently headed towards? They're 10s of billions in debt, with 10s of billions more in unfunded future obligations, they have a retarded energy policy that increases the cost of business in the state, companies are leaving the state more than any other, and if you don't include the influx of hispanic immigrants their population has been declining for a long time.

It also shows that people are willing to subject themselves to poor economic policies as long as the weather is alright and they have easy access to good weed.

The individual states are in a similar situation to Euro-zone member states. The only difference that I can see is that their central bank doesn't have a ridiculous balance sheet like ours does. California has been a pioneer in implementing these idiotic "fiscally liberal" policies, and they'll probably be the first to suffer the consequences. Question is, will the federal government (which can't even cover its own expenses) serve as a backstop. 6/30/2011 1:03:14 PM |

No, there is another major difference. Our central bank (usually) only trades federal debt when trying to set interest rates. The European federal government does not have enough debt to serve this role, so their central bank sets interest rates by trading Greek, German, etc, debt. This is why Greece was able to borrow so much although it defaulted just a few decades ago. It also explains why a Greek default would cause a currency crisis for the Euro but not so for California and the Dollar. 6/30/2011 2:07:36 PM |

That's true, but it's still expansion of the money supply no matter how you cut it. I think the ECB is set up in such a way that there's much more restraint placed on the central planners, which is why they're being forced into austerity. In our case, we can just keep pretending.6/30/2011 2:13:06 PM |

^ If the topic is still California, then you are quite wrong. California is being hammered by its creditors, and it has a debt to Gross-State Product of 7.71%. Compare that to Greece with a debt to GDP ratio of 142%. The difference is Europe's central bank prints money to aid Greece's borrowing. The U.S. central bank does no such thing for California.
