Contest for July 3, 2011
I first saw this clip when watching 'HOOD 2 HOOD: THA BLOCKUMENTARY" -- These fuckin dudes were WILDIN DA FUCK OUT, YO. If you ever appear on HOOD 2 HOOD, be prepared to answer a few general questions. They are completely standard, and come up in average daily situations all the time!
For example, the narrator will usually ask you "Where da fuck we is, and what does mothafuckas call you???" See! That's exactly what my brother asked me last night when we were looking for this ice cream store.
One thing I learned is that grime is a major problem affecting public housing in the United States. The narrator frequently asks the young men to explain "the types of grimy shit you see, growin up out here on a daily basis." I got the DVD sets to become fluent in ebonics before a business trip to Vallejo in September, and I think I am getting there.. cause I'm pretty sure that when something is "grimy", it usually involves witnessing the destruction of a neighbor or close relative's DOMEPIECE, or head. Many times, the storyteller uses imagery of a large citrus fruit exploding ("nigga got his mothafuckin' head popped like a melon"), so as I learn more, I will probably come to better understand these nuances!
Anyway, that's part of my problem... Regionally, they are a bit different, so it's harder for me. Tonight's lesson is about these two future astronauts from Bankhead (in the video above). These men will no doubt quickly find themselves at places like NASA, advancing our country (and the world) into the deep future. My biggest fear is that we are not able to communicate properly.
I mean, these dudes ALWAYS talk about "some fucked up that happened over a bitch". I guess an advantage of a Bankhead zip code is that TRAP SUITS are standard government issue... and since these two guys know it would be impossible to find a good woman to cook for you AND to keep your TRAP SUIT fresh. So, skip that. But, then, I'm skipping a chapter too.
I have invested in the DVD set, so I will be more confident eventually... but in the meantime, I could use some help. I don't know if I will learn anything new from these two fellas... but I've set my personal goal for tonight to understand every word these guys are saying. If you aren't too scared to participate: Play the video above, and note what each guy says, to the best of your ability. If necessary, define and explain what the guys are talking about!
