Maybe the burger really was bad. We will never know. I did buy ground round from kroger since it was late instead of the usual grass fed ground sirlon from whole foods.

I usually think to myself "this is so good i could eat it without the bun" when I eat my burgers but never actually tried it.

It didn't necessarily taste bad it just wasn't good enough to eat alone like a steak. I have eaten two steaks thsi week and I never get low quality steak. One of those cheap steaks is disgusting to me ust like the burger so maybe its just my taste has been conditioned to high quality meat.

It was an attractive price to get people's attention on July 7th (aka 7/7 2011).
It was so successful, I may do a crazy 8/8. with more variety.

Now that I think about it, when I am at restaurants, I stop eating the burger once I run out of bun (if the bun is smaller than the burger)

^^ not me!!! i would not eat shit with gorgonzola and avocado on top it really doesn't take away the meat flavor at all. sometimes i don't get the cheese and just have meat + avocado. to me avocado has never been an overbearing flavor to me. plus, as i believe pilgrimshoes mentioned somewhere else, hamburgers are fun to play around with topping wise. they really are. and you can add toppings that don't compromise the flavor of the burger (i think mostly condiments compromise the flavor. they just like, cover it so you're just eating ketchup)

^ YUM GIMME DAT

edit: DUH avocado is awesome.

A burger on a bun is basically a steak on a bun... a tremendously shitty steak.

lol

nahh dude you have to be creative with any ground meat to make it taste good... they didn't grind it cause it was grade a prime rib they ground it because it was the tip of something they couldn't do anything else with... or it was tough... or from a part of the animal you don't wanna enjoy eating.

you need to learn how to season meat (without just eating seasoning )

^ exactly!

hamburgers are such a fantastic food because they can combine classic and contemporary really well

hamburger: traditional american dish found at 38247293847239487234 locations across the US

but THEN you can do all kinds of fun things with it. put an egg on it. mix stuff in with your meat (veggies, etc). top it with basically anything you want - from cheese to veggies to other types of meat. hoisin ginger burger? YES PLEASE.

and then almost anything you think to do with a hamburger you can do with a piece of chicken and have an equally delicious meal but w/o the red meat.

while a bun can ADD to the deliciousness of a burger (or chicken sandwich) for me it often takes away because people are often sloppy with their buns. they're all "oh it is just a bun" but really it can bring some shit to the table if you let it.

Ground sirlon is not just crap they grind up. Once you start eating grass fed ground sirlon you will notice that it actually tastes better with less seasoning. You get to admire the natural taste of the meat. I had eaten my last 10 or so burgers that way so I guess going back to regular meat left me in a bad way.

Also, I had eaten at some pretty high quality burger joints and had my expectations of burgers raised to some ridiculous level.

I will probably never be able to back to eating regular ground beef. That was most likely the problem here.

The bun is a key part of the burger. My favorite is going with an english muffin but usually a french roll will do. Sour dough is pretty good as well.

[Edited on July 8, 2011 at 3:13 PM. Reason : steak doesn't need a bun because it was far superior. ]

sirloin is still crap meat... and again the parts they usually grind are too small to sell a steak to western sizzlin.

So wait.... you can't eat a burger without bread yet you're now trying to act like a burger snob about your meat. Yes grass fed meat is better...

you're either a moron or a troll.

I am a burger snob. That doesn't mean I want to eat burgers without buns. Theres a reason the bun is part of the burger. Its not like you say "I'm gonna try a burger with a bun" the bun is an essential part of the burger.

Whats the point of eating a burger without bread anyway? Unless you are poor, why not just eat steak?

you're missing out on some fantastic creations...

mainly because you can't put seasoning IN a steak.

my fiance and i have a meat grinder and make our own ground beef out of what we can't cut into a filet from beef loin... yep you guessed it filet burgers... (awesome!!)

but i hate bread... its a flavor sucker...

The bread I use is full of flavor. Seasoning in a steak is not necessary because the natural taste of the steak is better than what you can put in it. You can poke holes in your steak and the juices will carry whatever you have on it throughout the whole thing.

Sometimes I do the black and bleu, umami/parmesean or carmalized just to switch it up by simple salt and basil is the best way to admire the flavor of the meat itself.

[Edited on July 8, 2011 at 3:43 PM. Reason : thats why my bread molds so quickly. fresh and no preservatives. ]

Umami is a tastebud. You can aim for certain tastebuds with certain sets of seasoning and umami is by far my favorite but the hardest to execute so I usually leave that one for the restaurants.

Don't confuse burger snob with burger fanatic. A snob only wants the best experience while a fanatic wants anything dealing with the topic.

A snob would turn down sex with a woman that does not meet certain look requirements while a fanatic would probably have sex with anything walking in the same way a snob would turn down a burger without a bun while a fanatic would eat anything with the word burger in it.

Quote :
"For a long time, scientists debated whether umami was indeed a basic taste; but in 1985 at the first Umami International Symposium in Hawaii, the term Umami was officially recognized as the scientific term to describe the taste of glutamates and nucleotides.[7] Now it is widely accepted as the fifth basic taste. Umami represents the taste of the amino acid L-glutamate and 5’-ribonucleotides such as guanosine monophosphate (GMP) and inosine monophosphate (IMP).[8] Although it can be described as a pleasant "brothy" or "meaty" taste with a long lasting, mouthwatering and coating sensation over the tongue, umami has no translation. Umami is umami in all major languages, including English, Spanish, French, etc. The sensation of umami is due to the detection of the carboxylate anion of glutamate in specialized receptor cells present on the human and animal tongue.[9][10] Its fundamental effect is the ability to balance taste and round the total flavor of a dish. Umami clearly enhances the palatability of a wide variety of foods (for review Beauchamp, 2009).[11] Glutamate in acid form (Glutamic acid) imparts little umami taste; whereas the salts of glutamic acid, known as glutamates, can easily ionize and give the characteristic umami taste. GMP and IMP amplify the taste intensity of glutamate."

Right, so not a tastebud. That's like saying sweet is a tastebud.

But really I was referring to umami being difficult to accomplish in the kitchen. No, it's not.

From everything I've read Umami just means savory. I don't know why we can't just say savory.
