But that's my point. There are women all over the world with zero access to vitamin pills, that have perfectly healthy babies without taking vitamin supplements. And in some countries, although they have access to multivitamins, people don't take them unless they're elderly. They have healthy babies too. Hell, look at women in this country who either can't afford vitamins or don't know their pregnant right away, and they have healthy babies too. So if you're eating a healthy, well-balanced diet, there shouldn't be a need for a multivitamin pill.

Vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat soluble and build up in the system easily. If you're getting in a healthy diet and supplementing on top of that with multivitamins high in A, D, E, and K, then you can build up dangerously high levels in the body that will make you sick.

NTDs are found internationally... They're one of the most common birth defects worldwide

(FWIW, I'm not arguing people should take a multivitamin, just folic acid. Im not even going to pretend I have read up on the benefits of multivitamins)

And I'd bet a million lafta dollars that these were mothers that suffered from malnutrition during the pregnancy, not that they were getting plenty of food in a well-balanced diet.

That's what I'm trying to say though, you can find NTDs anywhere and different types are more frequent in different areas of the world. It's not just environmental factors that matter, because you also need genetic factors. The folic acid helps you prevent them in a major way (taking that 400mcg for 3 months prior to conception decreases your risk of having a child with an NTD by 70%). And even if someone does have a healthy diet, they might not be a fan of healthy foods more likely to have it (like avocados and lentils, etc). NTDs have been around forever and now people are just trying to lower the frequency.. Nothing wrong with that! (Especially when you consider anencephaly, exencephaly.. )

The only time I take one of these is on days when I know I just didn't eat anything good for me.

Oh I agree, if you're at risk go for it. It just makes me mad when I read these articles in froo froo magazines about how you basically have to be rich to be pregnant because OMG if you can't afford all this expensive shit you will be a horrible mother.

That said, I use coupons to get free vitamins and pop them whenever I remember to, which isn't very often

Oh, no, I don't think you have to be rich... I think folic acid is pretty cheap by itself, yes? I'm also all for educational programs to point out foods people wouldn't think of if they're not going to want to take the vitamin

But I do wish more women knew when to take it... Starting when you find out you're pregnant is not ideal at all

Not sure what kind of multi you're taking.....but I must recommend optimum nutrition opti-women(for you)
Optimen and optiwomen is the most complete multi available today, including micros and veg nutrients.
In the morning I take fish oil, optimens, glucosamine liquid (my joints are fucked) and protein...I normally wake up with an upset stomach...so if anything, the downng of shake and vits make me feel better.
Recently changed my diet and exercise a LOT and I feel better than I ever have!
Hope you figure out what's causing your stomach probs..good luck!

There is almost no evidence for the benefit of multivitamin supplements; in fact, many studies show harm.

However, studies do show benefits for certain vitamins/minerals when taken individually, specifically D and B12, which is what I take.

I know I do not eat a balanced diet, so seems like a good hedge.

I drink a pretty killer homemade green shake about 4-5 days a week. With all the veggies, I am worried if i take something like optimen, i am getting too many of certain vitamins. Kinda of just want some weak sauce “one a day” brand vitamin etc, but then worried I might get too few of a few nutrients my green shakes don’t have
