It's not like Outbreak was the first disease disaster movie, and there aren't many well-made movies in the genre coming out anyway so I don't really see that as a fault. The cast in this one is top notch (much better than Outbreak), and the director has made some really good films so this has the chance to be very good. 7/15/2011 2:05:50 PM |

Who is Jude Law? Why is he in every movie I have seen in the last four years?...Even the movies he's not acting in, if you look at the credits, he made cupcakes or something. 7/15/2011 2:29:13 PM |

Are you serious? Dustin Hoffman, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, Donald Sutherland comapred to Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Gwenyth? At best, they are equal (they arent), but I suspect there are lot more oscars in the first group than the last.

Notice how you're picking the best actors from Outbreak (and excluding the shitty ones) while mostly picking from the middle of the pack in Contagion. Cranston, Fishbourne, Cotillard, and Hawkes blow Rene Russo, Cuba Gooding Jr and Patrick Dempsey out of the fucking water.7/15/2011 3:59:43 PM |

I'm fine with comparing leads, but you're off on who you're choosing as leads. In Outbreak the leads are Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo and Cuba Gooding Jr (Morgan Freeman is billed slightly higher but Gooding has WAY more screen time). It's debatable in Contagion since all we've seen is a trailer, but I'll go Damon, Winslet and Fishbourne as the leads (Paltrow dies fairly early judging from the trailer). 7/15/2011 4:20:06 PM |

Quote : | "One of the reasons I love Soderbergh is because he's a great filmmaker who doesn't feel the need to impose one style on everything he shoots. Instead, he lets the material dictate what he shoots and how he shoots it, and in the case of "Contagion," he's outdone every virus movie I've ever seen by making the actual transmission of illness into the main character of his movie. The script by Scott Burns juggles a fairly sizable ensemble with ease, but the way Soderbergh, working as Peter Andrews, shot the film is a study in tension and paranoia. It's incredibly smart stuff on all fronts, and considering how horrible the film made me feel, it is a true pleasure to watch something made this well." | http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/motion-captured/posts/review-soderberghs-contagion-features-an-all-star-cast-smart-paranoid-script

AVOID THIS MOVIE! went and saw it after reading rt, imdb etc. reviews . i was really disappointed. as mentioned before about 40% of the movie is shot like a csi episode with just music playing while people collect evidence leading to the murderer(in this case the contagion). the ending leaves a lot to be desired and the acting was not that great. save your $$$, redbox or blueridge it 9/10/2011 1:59:19 AM |

I didnt think it was THAT bad, but there were some things I didnt understand...
For example
SPOILERS
Why did Kate Winslets character not bother to wear a mask or protective gear, when it was obvious by the actions of her character that she knew she was going into a highly dangerous situation? Made no sense when her character was supposed to be highly intelligent.
When Matt Damon's car is trying to get out of town, why is his car the first in a long line, and the first to be told to turn around (he acts surprised)?
Why does Matt Damon not IMMEDIATELY think of his child and mention his child is possibly infected with the same thing his mother just died from?
Why did they intoduce a character like Jude Law, who really did nothing to change or move the plot along? Had a conspiracy been proven, I would have understood it. But he was exposed as a profiteer. 9/11/2011 12:59:38 PM |

^ The disease is the only thing that moves the plot along. Everything else, including every character, is there to make the portrayal as realistic as possible. The point of the film is not to tell a compelling story or develop ANY characters. Its about giving a serious, 100% plausible "what if" scenario. There's no hollywood glam, no thrilling action sequences, no dramatic climax and no exceptional heroics from any of the characters.
Jude Law's character represents a real factor in this kind of story and he had a significant impact on how the crisis unfolded. I never saw Kate Winslet without protective gear when it was obiously necessary. Matt Damon's character was probably in shock from the news he was just given. I'm surprised he was even able to drive a car. 9/12/2011 10:51:58 AM |
BanjoMan All American 9609 Posts user info edit post |
That's some BS IMO. The point of having many different stories existing at once in a movie is to have something come together in the end, but in this case none of that really happend: many of the stories didn't contribute to anything and they could have been cut out.
like (SPOILER)
-The WHO thing in China -Jude Law
When these plot lines fizzle out it becomes dissapointing, and in no way can i justify dissapointment in cinema as a good thing.
Also, it was annoying that they built up a scenario that would be horrific with paltrow and her son dyinga gruesome death, but nothing else comes of it and it was also a let down. 9/12/2011 12:20:23 PM |

As a fan of realism, I enjoyed the movie, but it played out more like a case study or a documentary than a thriller.
Quote : | "When Matt Damon's car is trying to get out of town, why is his car the first in a long line, and the first to be told to turn around (he acts surprised)?" |
It wasn't to my recollection, they just cut once he was getting to the front. Thats how traffic jams work, no one knows what's going on, you get to the front, find out what happened, and turn around or move along.
Quote : | "The WHO thing in China" |
The WHO quarantined the area, triaged and tested the residents, and sent what they had to the scientists to work with. Nothing else happened because there was nothing else to happen, the scientists in the US found the vaccine before the WHO did. Or were you talking about the hostage thing?
Quote : | "plus Jude Law's charater didn't make any sence to me and it was a complete distratction." |
Well based on that sentence, I'm not too surprised.
Quote : | "Why did they intoduce a character like Jude Law, who really did nothing to change or move the plot along? Had a conspiracy been proven, I would have understood it. But he was exposed as a profiteer." |
Exposing a profiteer was exactly why they introduced him. They're showing all the powers that be in a crisis situation. You have government takeover, contrarians and sensationalists in the news coverage, people looking to turn a profit on the stupidity of the common sheeple, insider trading-type behavior from people with privileged information, selfishness, sacrifice, etc.
Yall are looking for the zombie apocalypse or some grandiose over-the-top conspiracy theory, but that would have been the BS. What you got was a pretty good look at how things would end up if this actually happened. I'll agree that it didn't seem to wrap up to a central message or idea, and my friend and I tried to think of one, but really it was just a basic picture of the faces of humanity.
