without surgery?
i don't mean teeth problems
i'm talking about unpleasant mouth geometry during the act of smiling
i could cite an example but i'm not tryna be mean

I have an awful smile.
Supposedly, if I took up the clarinet or something, I could even out and strengthen my muscles and have a straight smile. But I don't know if this would help my squinty eye. 7/18/2011 10:15:10 PM

I think so
I'm still not a huge fan of my smile now, but it used to be horrendous and I would literally practice smiling in front of the mirror :/ Finally after working at it for years I think I have a somewhat decent smile... but it used to be like this

an imbalance of gum to tooth ratio cannot be fixed but I guess if you learn to position your lips in a certain way, there are no worries, right?
I think it is all about building and training a muscle. Just my guess from my observation of babies learning how to smile. ? 7/18/2011 10:33:07 PM

This is an exaggerated version of me:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/12430447@N07/2643096228/
And instead of the lazy eye, I get a squinty eye when I smile. Anyway, it is awful, but it's cool too cause people know when something's really funny and delightful. I don't bust out my deformed face for a fake pity laugh.
This is about how crooked mine is:

Greta Von Susterenstein talks like she has a dick in her mouth so I wonder what she would sound like with a dick actually in her mouth. Only one way to find out. 7/18/2011 11:51:21 PM

Most smiles only look good as a dynamic movement. Very rarely does a smile look really good when viewed as a snapshot in time as one would see it in a photograph. The only smile I've ever noticed as being horrendous was from a girl who did a bunch of stage work and had a smile which had obviously been practiced thousands of times to be viewed by an audience too far away to see each visual cue in its entirety. Muscles contracted to show every whitened tooth. Every facial movement a caricature of a natural smile. I think she had done it so many times she had forgotten how to smile naturally. 7/18/2011 11:57:38 PM

on the other side, a great smile can brighten an otherwise normal looking face. for example, here's a friend of mine from high school whose smile I've always envied

to the OP....yes you just have to practice a lot. it's basically muscle memory. i used to be so bad that my lips and cheeks would quiver. now i think i can produce a pretty good natural smile on demand. 9/21/2011 5:24:53 PM

with practice I now smile like this
