First person to properly identify the significance of this value will have a mediocre chocolate-chip cookie delivered, within a reasonable distance, to him or her by yours, truly, at my earliest convenience

it's a reference value to measure certain nuclear cross sections

You're either entirely wrong or you're gonna have to be more specific...lookin for a key word or two here

A neutron with an energy of 0.0253 eV is used as reference to measure nuclear cross sections such as absorption, fission, scattering, etc.

This is the energy when a neutron is considered to be a "thermal" neutron.

I was going to say, if i remember right from a nuclear physics class, and the previous posts.... there's a standardized energy at whiccross sections are determined, and you can calculate what a cross section would be at other energies using this reference point... right?

those answers are inadequate. anybody could google and get that answer.

question is, why THAT standardized value?

Good job, that happened in way less posts than I had anticipated. I will get up with you tomorrow for delivery details. Next challenge coming soon

He asked the "significance of this value" so I told him. It was adequate enough to get me a cookie.

Don't be jealous I won a cookie and you didn't.

eh "significance of this value" could mean either way... but nah, enjoy your cookie, i don't want any cookie.

anyway, so i want to know why it is that value... where does that number come from?

oh and to OEPII - Just a quick synopsis: when neutrons are produced in a reactor from fission events they are hauling ass at pretty high energies, on the order of hudreds of keV up to a couple MeV. After banging around in the matrix for a while they lose their energy to the environment and are considered "thermalized" when they slow to a speed corresponding to the baseline energy around room temperature (i don't remember the exact value but it's in the 60-degF range). They're still moving at about 2200 m/s which corresponds to an energy of 0.0253 eV. This is, of course, a statistical value representing the most probable energy of any given thermal neutron and it is the energy about which a fissile uranium nucleus absorbs the nuetron

damn i need to make these a little more difficult...seems to be a fine line though, if i make it so someone can eventually figure it out they will do so pretty quickly. if i make it more obscure than that noone ever will get it

You have no fucking idea what you're talking about.

I mean really, give me an engineering to compare it to. The pwnage will come like an electron from a free neutron decay.

how would anyone know this shit?

if you want to be physics crazy with a constant

why not go with

-13.6 eV

or 1/137

I mean, fuck... come on.

I am a physics person, and I've never seen that number...

maybe I ran across it when I took nuclear, that one time...

pfff

you do know that most physics and engineering people at State do solid state physics of one kind or another?
