I need something to play my music. It's mostly flac/lossless. itunes doesn't play it and VLC sucks and you can't even sort my track (unless I'm missing something).
Any good audio players out there? 7/27/2011 9:14:38 AM |

piggybacking on to this
is there a way to play a folder of MP3s in OSX without opening X number of instances of quicktime where X is the number of tracks in the folder? basically, i tend to give new music i download a JV tryout before i move it up to Varsity in my itunes and eventually on to my iTouch or iPhone. is there any sort of functionality in quicktime or another app that would act similar to the WMP one click play folder function? 7/27/2011 9:19:22 AM |

I'm seriously about to run VLC in parallels just because VLC for OSX sucks and you can't sort/filter by track number. 7/27/2011 9:25:28 AM |

I have windows 7 in parallels but I'd rather not be running it every time I want to play an audio file. I found a decent looking app in the app store but it's $33. Grrr. (begin perpetual OSX sucks rant)

You could covert the FLAC to ALAC and use any Quicktime based player.
Agent 0, quicklook can just play music, but it won’t work in the background (at least not in Snow Leopard). You just press spacebar when you have the files selected. 7/27/2011 9:39:20 AM |

I don't want to convert anything. I play my flac files else ware. Why is this so hard. I just want an audio player with a media library and that sorts by track. 7/27/2011 9:42:35 AM |

^Thanks! This seems to work. I wish they would update VLC already. It's ridiculous you can't add a track column and sort like you can in the windows version.
Do you use it? For some reason the global shortcuts doesn't work in preferences and I can't get the play/forward/back keys on the keyboard to work with it. Just keeps bringing up itunes. There a way to make the play key NOT bring up itunes?

I don't, but my next door office neighbor is all audiophile and shit, and that's what he uses. I'll check and see if he has that problem too. 7/27/2011 1:52:08 PM |

Have you installed the Perian codec pack for QuickTime?
If so, does that also give extra power to iTunes, which requires QuickTime? 7/27/2011 2:49:51 PM |

I don't think QuickTime has media library support. You have to add songs on an ad hoc basis. 7/27/2011 2:51:11 PM |

i've always used Songbird and loved it.
but recently, I've just been streaming everything over my Subsonic server at home. it transcodes FLACs on the fly. 7/27/2011 3:09:37 PM |

Quote : | "Fluke is a small utility for Mac OS that lets you play FLAC files right within iTunes. Features
16bit/44.1KHz playback Multiple file and folder handling (the latter from command line only at the moment) Track number and count support
Known issues
Only 16bit/44.1KHz files play fine. Any other resolution affects the speed of playback which is a known Xiph.org issue. Embedded artwork is not supported. However if you've got an iTunes Store account, select the songs you added, right-click and hit Get Album Artwork. iPod, iPhone, iPad, Airport Express, Apple TV and other devices from Apple are NOT supported — Fluke uses a third-party library not available on those devices. CD burning does not work for the same reason as the above.
TODOs
Folder handling via GUI Offer option to convert to Apple Lossless on the spot " |
