Found one of these spiders last night when I woke up to piss. It was chillin on the wall in the corner so i trapped it with a CD container lid and a greeting card. Took some pics then stuck him in the toaster oven on 250 to die quickly. Then took the last two pics. Asked a guy I know who is an exterminator if he thought it was a brown recluse and he said probably not since it doesnt have the very distinct violin shape on its back, but he didnt know exactly what it was. But he also isnt that good with identifying spiders, he just knows to sprays some dust when a customer complains of spiders.

Thanks, glad to know now what they are. And yes they are pretty big to me too. Online said they are supposed to only be ~2" all the way across but I must have some giants over here because the past couple ones I have seen have been 2.5-3.5"

Quote : | "The Southern house spider (Kukulcania hibernalis) is a species of large North American spider which exhibit strong sexual dimorphism. The males very closely resemble brown recluses, having similar coloration and body structure, though they have slender bodies and are uniformly brown, unlike the brown recluse. The females are dark brown or black and more compact. Both sexes may grow to be roughly 2 inches (5.1 cm) across (legs extended), with the males typically having longer legs, and the females often having larger, bulbous bodies. The abdomen of the southern house spider is covered with fine velvety light gray hair.
Female southern house spiders are rarely seen, as they build radial webs around crevices, for which reason their family (Filistatidae) is called crevice weavers. Females seldom move except to capture prey caught in their webs. Males, on the other hand, typically wander in search of insects and females to mate with, having no particular territory.
The southern house spider is a cribellate spider. That is, its spinnerets do not produce adhesive webbing. Instead, to capture prey the spider uses its legs to comb webbing across its cribellum, a spiked plate near the spinnerets. This combing action frays and tangles the strands, producing a fine, velcro-like netting that ensnares insect legs.
Male southern house spiders sometimes appear aggressive, but they do not bite unless trapped, and their mouthparts are too small to easily penetrate human skin. They do, however, have an unnerving tendency to crawl across anything in their path regardless of whether it is alive. This is not aggression; these spiders are simply nearly blind and cannot see larger animals. Indeed, these spiders instinctively play dead if they feel threatened (a tactic which is effective against their common predators).
Southern house spiders are capable of crawling through crevices as narrow as 1/4 in (0.66 cm) due to their elongated bodies and compact legs." |

I never noticed it before, but that sort of mimics the violin pattern on the back of a Brown Recluse. 7/28/2011 10:37:33 PM |

hell naw
Fuck having a vampiric creature with 8 legs and far too many eyes hunting living things in my house.
if that becomes necessary, I'll be introducing a Frog into my home. 7/29/2011 9:50:21 AM |

Oh I assure you they look just as bad in person. After further review the one I saw in my bedroom was most likely this and not a brown recluse... It was almost as big as my palm.

Spiderwebs are pretty much a sign that your house if filthy IMO. First you had bugs. Then the spiders moved in. Now they're dropping their feces and bug carcasses in the corners of your home and you're too lazy to knock down their webs and put out some bug spray.

Lol, I don't have spiderwebs in every corner of my house, and I wasn't suggesting that you keep a colony of spiders in your house. Only that spiders get a bad rap. If they're outside I leave em alone. If they're inside and clearly aren't black widows, I'll move em outside. 8/1/2011 10:24:17 AM |
