The other thread (message_topic.aspx?topic=492275) was too old to bump, so I'm recreating it.

A friend of mine just posed this question, I had a few answers (will post) but I wanted to see what you think, other twwers!
I'm in an apartment, so I have slightly more space, but I still want plants around other than flowers I pick from around campus (shh, don't tell!)


Mint works nicely, I'm hoping to re-pot some from home for this fall. It gives a nice fresh smell, too.
Also, aloe vera plants are good because if you place them by a window so they can get enough light, you won't have to worry about watering them very often. They spawn if they're healthy, so you might have another that you need to re-pot by the end of the year... the huge one I have at home has lots and lots of grandchildren because we keep re-potting the smaller plants. Also practical and good for burns!
I know people who've had violets, but they can be expensive and require a lot of light to stay healthy.
I'm hoping to get a small bamboo plant or a tiny bonsai tree as well, those are always fun.

Another thing, cacti are good plants as they come in various sizes including tiny and adorable, and they don't require a lot of watering (it's easier to drown a plant than dehydrate it), but they come with the downside of being a hazard if you're not super careful around it.

Ornamental/dwarf plants are always fun too, I used to have a miniature pepper plant that lived on the kitchen table and kept producing tiny but brightly colored pepper plants. The ones I've seen are maybe 8 inches high, so I didn't think about them when I thought about bonsai trees.

Is there a balcony involved? If so you can plant all sorts of crap.

Most herbs will do well in pots on sunny windowsills. I had a friend who used to grow strawberries in her dorm.

I'm going home for a few days this week, hopefully will take some herbs and things from our herb/vegetable garden.
Hopefully my roommates won't mind if I cover the window sills in the living room area as well as my bedroom window sill

I like growing African Violets. One of the old ladies at church gave me one of those cool pots that you pour the water into the bottom and the plant goes in the top. That thing is great and they will grow very nicely. Just make sure there is water in the bottom and its sitting in a window with decent light and that is it.

wandering jew. I have a regular one and a fuzzy one. You can have some clippings if you'd like.

they grow like crazy and you just break a leaf off and stick it in the soil to start a new one.

well, you could call it tradescantia or dayflower instead of wandering jew...


my violets caught mealybugs from a new addition. the treatment is wiping every surface of every leaf with a q-tip in isopropanol because the leaves can't get wet with other treatments, and supposed to repeat every day for some infinite amount of time. i have about 10 of them and have only managed to treat 3 of them in entirety so far. fuck violets.

I like calling them my wandering jews. The regular one's name is Anne Frank, I've had her (or at least a plant from which I've taken clippings and made a new plant) since 2003.


The fuzzy one is nameless. Just "fuzzy wandering jew."
