Is it possible to learn how to be left hand dominate if you're right handed?

I got 6 weeks in a sling and months of rehab on my right arm...so it might be worth a shot.

First challenge, trying to wipe my ass with my left hand and not feeling awkward as hell.

I cannot say I am ambidextrous, but I notice that functions are hand-based. In other words, I group the instrument and the function by assignment to hand, and that is how the muscle memory is allocated in the brain.

For example, I chose to serve in tennis right handed, even though I am left handed, so I only serve right handed. I cut with scissors right handed, but I write left handed. I think switching functions to a non-dominant hand is much more challenging than just providing equal assignment of tasks to a specific hand from the very beginning.

I've been working on this for 4 or 5 months just as an experiment.

I started off forcing my self to brush my teeth left handed (I've noticed I revert back when I'm drunk-brushing). Now I brush left handed 99% of the time. And during the day I'll try to force myself to do something left handed that I've always done right-handed. Like peeling and eating an orange, or banana. Or opening a jar.

Since I started, I've noticed using my left hand has become less awkward than before, but I still give in to the right hand for important stuff. I imagine you'll find it easier if you can't use your right hand for anything at all.

I had a severe injury to my dominant hand, that left me without its use for 6 weeks. And limited use for another 6 or so.

During that time, I found my left hand did what it needed to, my body adapted quite well (and quickly). Brushing teeth, eating, ass wiping... the only thing that was difficult was washing one hand without use of the other but you learn to adapt... and writing, which never was picked up.

I tried to maintain my new found dexterity, by continuing to brush my teeth with my left hand. However, just like I instantly adapted, I instantly lost the ability once I regained use of my dominant hand.

It was pretty interesting to see how quickly I was able to adapt. This may be attributed to the fact that I was left hand dominant up through about age three, then I switched. And I wrote with both hands through first grade when my teacher made me pick one and never use the other.

my grandfather was right-handed and learned to write well with his left hand after losing his right arm.

I have a pretty decent right and left handed flick. I write with my left hand, bat with my right and I use scissors with my right hand. I shoot hoops with my left and throw baseballs with my left. I pick my nose with fingers on my left and right hand. I play instruments with my right hand.

statistically speaking, most people that are ambidextrous (including myself) start out as left hand dominant and because so many tools/functions in life are for right handed people you develop greater dexterity in that hand. So while, what is it, 1 in 10 people are left handed and then a relatively small portion of those people are ambidextrous I'd say the odds are against you but if you practice at it, it's definitely possible just like in cases where the right hand is lost/non-functional but you have to remember that left handed people naturally "practice" their whole lives.

I can play darts, pool, golf, disc golf, bowling, etc. with both hands and do so frequently. I can throw footballs, etc. with both hands and can actually do one-arm push-ups with both arms. My penmanship left handed is poor to begin with but right handed it's not really much worse and certainly legible. My dad also tried to make me right handed as a kid so that could have had something to do with it.

I have a left handers book that has all sorts of crazy facts/stats about that. there's a really high percentage of left handed people who die every year directly due to use of right handed tools

If I ever use a knife to cut something while eating, I start eating again with my left hand, which the fork got switched to. It usually takes me a minute to realize why eating is a less natural process.
