I don't see why there's an extra criminal element due to the offender being a teacher. I think that if a 33 year old bangs a 12 year old, that's statutory rape and is dealt with accordingly.

If a teacher bangs a 16-year old, and the age of consent is 16, for example, that's just unprofessional. They should be fired, but not prosecuted.

Teachers are prosecuted for sleeping with their students for the same reasons that doctors and ministers are for sleeping with their charges. It's the misuse of their "position of power" to take advantage of those that they are supposed to care for.

I think that does add to the heinousness of the crime.

There was a case in Asheville a couple of years ago where a new teacher (21 or 22, might have been a student teacher) was charged for having sex with an 18 year old that attended the school but wasn't in her classes. That's just stupid.

When I was in high school this happened at my school. Male teacher, female student. The student was 16 at the time, so there were no criminal charges. The teacher just couldn't work for that school system anymore...

The student ended up getting harassed big time though by other students. The other students were pissed cause she couldn't keep her mouth shut and bragged to everyone about how she and Corey were doing it all the time. Basically there were other girls trying to get some of Mr. Crawford and they were pissed that she got him fired.

This mess has got to stop. You can't criminalize everything that makes people uncomfortable. It is wrong to regulate sex by profession. NC recognizes that people can consent to sex at age 16. Teachers having sex with students over 16 is unethical and unprofessional, but it should not be a crime.
