http://dsc.discovery.com/videos/curiosity-did-god-create-the-universe.html

An episode on Discovery Channel.

Pretty amazing... i'm not sure if this has been addressed this directly on TV before.

They do a good job of dismantling Religion so far, but they don't really address the "god" question in any unique way...

Oooh, they are having a followup discussion with other scientists/experts (Stephen Hawking did the previous show).

They have some theology guy on the panel of experts.

Even Biblical evidence does not adequately address this fact, due to relevance. Scripture is the history of our relationship with God, not God's relationship to the universe.

- earth created in 7 literal days
- earth created in the steps/order laid out in the Bible

- the bird "Nyx" existing before the universe (Greek mythology)

- two "feathered serpents" "thought" the universe into existence (Apache)

- the product of hermaphroditic infatuation (paganism)

I don't think it is, but many people do, and those people are wrong.

If you're asking me to individually address the views of every 7 billion humans on earth... that's a daunting task.

The point is that modern science has eliminated the majority of creation stories of known religions as being impossible with the observable universe. :-\

Well... what do you want to know? If you propose your hypothesis for how the earth/universe was created, i'll tell you whether it is possible or not given what we know from science.

I've addressed this before that the 7 days are representative to the time which man's place was being prepared on the Earth, thus the Earth, could have existed for billions of years before than, but the act of creation of life upon the Earth, and the other acts, are implied as mostly miraculous supernatural occurrences wrought by God.

I think it's simple and straightforward. Should God have made it more complicated for people to be saved?

This doesn't solve any of the logical or practical problems with this particular creation mythology...

I can, and have for more than a decade, accepted that the story of Genesis as figurative, which is what you're saying. The problem then is you can't get people, even real Christians, to agree which parts are figurative and which aren't, which means that you can't know who to listen to. Your answer is going to be to seek the truth yourself, which is fine, but what happens when my truth is vastly different than yours? And a large scale, this process points towards religion merely being an entirely human process, an idea that undermines religion, which someone like you would obviously reject outright.

I didn't say it was figurative, I said that it occurred by supernatural occurrence according to the Word of God, who is the Christ. I'm merely saying it is impossible to determine the age of the Earth from scripture, but it is possible to determine the age of man on the Earth.

haha, you remind me SOO MUCH of someone i know IRL... this person can easily dismiss the "logical" quandaries of the Bible because, like you, the "relationship" is the most important part.

But the fact of the matter is that not everyone is like you, not everyone's brain works like yours. You can't expect people to just wave off these very critical questions...

It's like that "5 Love Languages" book people have been throwing around recently (you know this book was written by a Christian? He's a preacher at a church in Winston Salem...). Just because you "communicate" with God by the "feeling" doesn't mean everyone's language with God is the same. If my language or someone else's is more critical and skeptical and you are asking people to just ignore these instincts, you come off as cruel and uncaring when people ask these types of questions.

first, NO, it's not possible to determine the "age of man on Earth." That's just goal-post moving when you realize the classical ideas about the Earth being 7k years old are definitively proven wrong by modern science.

What do you think the Catholic church did for half a millenia? You make it sound like I'm so sort of pusher trying to push my agenda. I spread clear Gospel doctrine according to scripture, if anyone wants to claim I'm "interpreting or spinning" scripture they can be my guest, it wouldn't be the first time I've been corrected.

But when I have people come and say to me that I need to save myself by works, this is a deep and obvious flaw in fundamental Christian thinking, that not only destroys the sacrifice of Christ, but exalts man to the level of God.

There is no salvation in works, nor ritual nor sacrifice, all was accomplished by Christ, I wish people would just see this and stop thinking they have to subscribe to some "church" for salvation.
