You know, by being a boss of female and male employees and by being someone's boyfriend, I get to see how often people get sick. It seems to me that girls usually get sick 2 days per week or 8 times a month on average.
That's an alarming 26.6% of the time.
Guys, on the other hand, usually get sick once a month on average for the span of about 2 days. (Hangovers not included as being sick)
That's only 6.67% of the time.
Do these statistics seem accurate to you? Do you think guys get sick a lot more, but just not communicate that they're sick and act like their normal? Or are female bodies really that screwed up?

If it's a cold I might be home like one or two days depending on how I feel. I also have the option to work from home so I can still work remotely.
But there are days when I know I have a ton of unused sick time and I need to burn it off so if I don't feel well (ie I feel tired) then I take a sick day.
Let me put it this way. My sick time is always maxed out at 80 hours unused because that's how little i use it. 8/20/2011 2:18:52 PM

Lower-quality or lower-importance of the job tends to perpetuate a bad work ethic too. If people feel like their participation has a minor impact.

I can help explain our reasoning. Hiring a 40 year old for a minimum wage job means there is something wrong with this person.
A 40 year old cannot support a house or rent payment working at a minimum wage job. If they went 40 years and ended up making minimum wage, it shows me they're not responsible. They're either living off someone else, spending all their money to rent a room from someone and drink/party/do drugs/gamble with the rest of their money [anything other than be responsible with it]
It hasn't been until very recently that bank executive had to look for minimum wage jobs... for part time money. As a business owner, I don't really want to teach someone everything I know for 6 months worth of productivity.
I'm looking for employees that will last the longest at minimum wage. Those are usually teenagers. Everything is provided for them: a roof over their head, food, supplies. Them getting a job is new and their money goes a long way with paying cell phone bills, movie tickets, and clothes. It is a small stepping stone for them to learn what work is, gain social service skills, and allows them to contribute to society. If I hire a sophomore in high school, chances are I can retain them until the go to college.
I hope that helps. 8/20/2011 2:40:15 PM

only problem with that logic from a hiring standpoint is that most of the time you wouldn't know if the kid has no work ethic or if the rehab guy is truly trying to turn his life around until they have actually worked there for a bit... 8/20/2011 2:53:45 PM

I would not since you never really know or not if they are legitimately turning their life around. Every tick of the clock, they can reverse their decision. If their morals didn't stop them once, it probably won't stop them again. They require constant supervision and little trust. They got caught once, that means they're a little bit wiser on what not to do to get caught a second time.

So you don't pay minimum wage. This isn't rocket science. Pay more to get better workers. If your workers aren't constantly no shows and aren't stealing from you, it's worth an extra $2/hour. Her employees that she paid better worked better. Funny how that works. 8/20/2011 3:28:02 PM

Hmm. I had this preconceived notion about that also. However, you get the same output from someone whether you pay them $6.25, $7.25, or $9.25. They always think they deserve more over time.
Minimum wage in 2007 was $5.85 and workers worked just as hard as the $7.25 employees today. The prices on my menu haven't changed since 2007 and by society's standards I'm "expensive". My costs keep rising, but competition keeps undercutting themselves
According to an Ohio University study:
"A widely-quoted press release from 2005 is about an Ohio State University study which found that 26% of the restaurants in Columbus, Ohio failed in their first year, and 57-61% in their first three years."
And that is when the bubble was the highest and people were spending the most money. You can only imagine the failure rate after 2007. Failure rates are important because many businesses fail because their prices are too low.
-----
Now to jump to another subject... I have to make $300 in sales just to pay my bills for the day without labor. Given minimum wage is $7.25 and someone works 10 of the 11 hours I'm open, that's $72.50/hour. WAIT--No it's not. You cry about getting 25% of your paycheck getting taken out in taxes...well we, the restaurant have to double it. If you pay $20, we send in $40. So you're really making more than $72.50... more like $8.00 an hour.
Now, in order to make $8.00 an hour, the business has to sell $300 worth of food plus make $8.00 profit from selling $24 worth of food per hour. That's $240 worth of food, or a little less than the cost of all my bills put together. Labor is hella expensive.
We've all seen Forrest Gump. He buys a shrimping boat and doesn't catch not a damn thing. But when a hurricane comes and disables all the other shrimping boats, they start catching all the shrimp. The only thing that has kept me in business is my 4pm to 3am hours. I starting getting all my business when all the other shops close around 10-11pm. Otherwise, I would not be in business because there are only 5 or 12 customers between 4pm and 10pm. Between 10pm and 3am, you'll be astounded.

I worked at pizza hut for 9 years. They were a thriving company until they started making everything frozen and cheap.
My preconceived notion was that they top executives were greedy. I thought that if I went back and made a quality pizza, that I could be the next pizza hut.
M post-conceived notion is that they were forced to in order to keep up with the competition. When they switched to frozen dough, they cut their entire morning prep labor which, like I said in my previous post, 1 labor hour = ~1 hour of all expenses. So they saved a shitton of money and are able to give the customers unlimited toppings for $10. Dominos has the $7.99 large now.
As a small business we have to put up with these super huge companies that get super huge bulk discounts go to war with each other. A small business has to pay the highest product prices, so you see how high quality just can't survive in mom and pop shops.
I have, on the other hand, have been able to pull it off by working 1692 consecutive days without a day off by doing everything myself. 8/20/2011 4:04:58 PM

To think, an employee wants more money as they become more valuable to you...
Quote : | "Minimum wage in 2007 was $5.85 and workers worked just as hard as the $7.25 employees today." |
And the dollar is worth less than it was in 2007. You can't compare 2011 money to 2007 money. $7.25 is about equal to being paid $6.65/hr in 2007.
Quote : | "The prices on my menu haven't changed since 2007 and by society's standards I'm "expensive". My costs keep rising, but competition keeps undercutting themselves " |

I don't think you understand merbig.
Material cost for pizza keeps rising, labor keeps rising, yet prices of pizza are falling in the corporate level to new lows.
This is an economic catastrophe for small businesses. The only sector that hasn't been given a free-bee to by the government is..... small businesses. The corporations, banks, poor, and unemployed got handouts.
Who employs the most people? small businesses. Who needs hired help? small businesses. Do I want to do all the labor and run my business? no Do I want to hire help? yes Can I hire help? no Why does the country have a 10% unemployment rate?
Starting to get the picture?

Fuck, you started your business fully knowing what you were up against with Pizza Hut's tactics.
And there are many independent pizza places that do well, but you're in an over saturated market and you don't know how to manage.
Quote : | "Who employees the most people? small businesses." |
lol, employees....
And there are many types of small businesses, from law firms, to consulting agencies, realtors, machine shops, small factories, ect. A small business is defined as an independent entity with less than 500 employees. But most people like to think of small businesses as just mom and pop stores. But they're in the minority for small businesses and they contribute little to the labor force.
Even included in small businesses are your independent fast food joints that are licensed by the larger chain restaurants (like Subway, or Bojangles).
Sorry, but you are in the minority, and if you were to disappear tomorrow, nobody would give a shit.
Quote : | "Who needs hired help? small businesses." |
Many of them are fine. There's nothing the government can do for you if you have an unviable business model that is unable to compete with your competitors and if you don't have a market for your product.

I learned in a sociology class (AHA!) that on average women actually take off like 1.5 or 2 more days a year than men. And when you factor in that they're the most likely to be taking off for child-related issues, they ultimately take less sick time than men. I also think that women are less likely to identify as "sick" because we're accustomed to feeling crappy once a month.
I don't know if any of this applies to a teenage girl who doesn't need money very much so she can call in "sick" to her pizza job at will. 8/20/2011 7:16:06 PM
